An unusual question was asked today about "oem tires":

the dealer is telling me that my 525i needs oem tires only..and do not rotate them?????this is my first bmw and i am a lil green to all this...i have the 16 in wheel package...any help out there?????
My original tires were all-season 225/55R 95H tires on 16 x 7.0 in. wheels, but I don't remember the brand or model. Do you?

BMW cars usual burn through tires so auditioning a new set every couple of years gets easy.

Eventually you find a set you like. Right now, I'm loving my Conti DW tires.
I don't seem to get more than something like 20K out of mine!
- One users quest to diagnose uneven tire wear on the inside edge due to excessive and uneven alignment camber & toe (1) (2)

So, since the most-often recommended tire is that Conti DW, that's what I think I'll get soon.

Yeeeeeees! That's exactly it. I searched, I swear! ;)
Just to give you a hint on finding PDFs in the bestlinks (of which there are at least a hundred good ones), all you need to do is add an underscore to your search, and it will only look for PDFs.

So, for example, had you searched for /wheels f3, you would have gotten links to reference threads on the topic.

But, had you searched for /wheels_ or _wheels, you get the reference PDFs.

The entire bestlinks process is kindergarten simple, and always attempts to be logically the first thing you'd think of, by design (but it's always improving, over time, by the inexorable process of incessant incrementalism).

EDIT:
Since the chart was a multi-page PDF, I took the liberty of converting it to a single-page graphic image; and since the graphic image was white on black, I took the additional liberty of inverting the colors (so that the chart is more easily printable).

Hello - I have an E46 2004 330ci convertible that needs new tires. My old ones were Pirellis, but dealer just told me that Pirellis are no longer available in my size. My 2015 650xi has Goodyears. What's the best performance tire? Not looking for long wear (and a lousy ride). TIA for your input - I have to get back to the dealer ASAP. Dealer tried to talk us into continentals, and sorry if this offends anybody, but I thought they looked like crap (even if that's what sold with the cars as dealers states). Had to replace original tires when car was less than 2 years old. That's when we got the Pirellis - should also mention less than 30,000 miles on the 2004 (won't drive it with the top up ;)
While I couldn't fathom anyone buying tires at the stealer either, what I observe in the tens of thousands of threads that I've experienced over the years here, is that the less something matters, the more religious the discussion.

Or, put in economics terms, the more the item is a commodity, the more the marketing teams will sow FUD and try, at the same time, to make meaningless differences worth something to you, such that people are worried about a decision as mundane as buying tires (which I buy by the book - but - having said this is a religious issue - I'll leave "my" book out of this discussion).

The PLACE I recommend you get tires is "tire_rack", but, you pick whatever place you want. I have five of them sitting in my front yard at this very moment, in fact, because I'm gonna try mounting them myself (and I'll probably fail - but I want to try once, in my life).

How you buy tires?
Since it's a religious issue, there is no right answer.

Choosing tires always depend on what you want and need from them.
Actually, I must correct that (and here is where we start getting religious, I know).

Choosing tires is like choosing a mail-order husband.
The problem is not so much that there are a lot out there, and that they are all just about the same.

The problem is that you really don't know how they will SUIT YOU.
You will NEVER know this information, until you live with them for a while.

And, that's impossible, for a tire that you've never owned, mail ordering on the net.

Sure, you can ask all his prior friends what he was like, and that will always be data, but, rest assured, some will love him, some will hate him, but all will have ridden him DIFFERENTLY than you will, as they may be a different size, weight, they may be lowered, they might like to track, they may not be sensitive to road perturbations, etc.

So, effectively, you can't realistically choose tires by any other method than the facts.
1. Do they fit (is he the right size and weight, yes, people care about height, for example just as much as the tires need to have the right sidewall-to-width ratio).
2. Are they the right color (is he the same "race" as you are, if whitewalls matter to you for example or are they the right tread to match with the other tires on the car including the spare).
3. What are the bare basic (and I mean BASIC MINIMUM) performance metrics that are STANDARD (as much as anything can be standardized), such as: AA/A/400.

That is, where does he live, what language does he speak, how old is he, what's his profession, how much money does he make (yes, that's important to many people), etc.

For that, there's only TRACTION/TREADWEAR/SPEED (aka TEMPERATURE).

EDIT: Notice the warranty is almost always meaningless (except as a fantastic FUD marketing gimmick) and only useful, if he has a twin brother, and you can switch between them for no cost if you're unhappy with the first twin.
Check out Tire Rack, as has been suggested....There are also extensive reviews and specs on the site that will help you make your decision.
The main problem with those reviews is it's like reading the diary of every woman who ever went out with your prospective mail-order husband.

99.98% of the people who write those reviews are idiots.
The other 0.02% don't back up their claims with *any* data other than the buttmeter.

Hence, I find the reviews far worse than worthless, as they waste my time which would be better spent comparing reliably OBJECTIVE standardized measurements, admittedly few as they are (and admittedly flawed as they are).

YMMV, of course.
Someone wants to marry Charles Manson even though they can't possibly consummate nor form a real relationship for a test drive.
I don't get it.
But, there's a mail-order tire for everyone.

I almost always buy my tires from Tire Rack, but I just found out that there is an outfit that is ony 7 years old (I spoke to the owner today) who says they strive to compete with Tire Rack on prices.

That's a good thing, so, here's the information, if you need tires (I would have saved over fifty bucks on the six that I bought last week).

This sounds a bit mad...

But go to your local BMW dealership and have them price some tires for you. I am looking for some new tires for my 1999 528i and am running 225/55/R16. I found good tires that would fit at a place in town and the cheapest they wanted was 130 a tire installed. I went to my BMW dealer to price some parts and while I was there a rep told me to check out there tires so I did. I found V rated tires (the others weren't) for 63 dollars a piece although that was not the installed price. I asked the mechanic and they said 30 a tire to install so I figure I will buy my tires there then go to a place that I know installs tires for 15 each. That is what I plan to do.

Hope this doesn't sound like trolling, but I'm very sceptical of a selection method which resulted in using the cheapest possible tyres (Fuzion Touring) that will fit the E39!

As far as grip goes, the method seems to rely heavily on the UTQG wet traction rating. From the data in post 25, I struggle to believe that a cheap-arse Sumitomo or Kuhmo has the same wet grip as, say, a Pirelli P7. So I question the accuracy of the UTOG measure, and its relevance for cars with ABS (the test method involves a locked tyre)

And while wet braking performance is important (it is my top criteria in tyre selection), there are other factors such as wet cornering, dry braking, dry cornering and breakaway progressiveness which are pretty important for driver enjoyment errr... I mean safety :angel:. Unfortunately, there is very little measured data for these characteristics. Personally, I select tyres based on user reviews... and some bro-science I guess!

Sorry for muddying the waters. Motor Magazine does an annual tyre test, which has some detailed info on the various aspects of tyre performance. If you like, I can scan it?

This is a good point. But, it requires data to exercise your point.

Data that you might not have.

In fact, if you read the $250,000 study, commissioned by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003 about consumer's tire buying habits (see attached), you'll be appalled at HOW most consumers select tires!

While that 182-page PDF explains how most people in California select tires, I buy them purely by the numbers.

Clearly, to me, tires are a commodity; while, to many others, they are not (and that makes all the difference in "emotional" or "stylish" selections). Of course, with commodities, emotion and style isn't part of the equation, so, all that matters is bare bones known repeatable reliable statistically valid data, of which, there is precious little available to the consumer.

As an aside, I should clarify that the espoused method doesn't necessarily RESULT in the cheapest possible tire, since you can use ANY selection method you want, once you're armed with the comparison data. In fact, I would NEVER select a tire, even if it were cheaper, that has a "B" rating on straight traction.

And, of course, SOME people use warranty (of all things) as a selection method; or the thousands of reviews from the hoi polloi (which I find unbearable to read, for their lack of attention to scientific methods).

However, to your point, it is true that "I" selected the cheapest wet traction=A, Speed/Temperature=A tire that Tire Rack had in stock, which was the Fuzion, which is a subsidiary of Bridgestone. I have had those same tires for the last 20K miles, and they work fine by me (albeit, the 400 treadwear rating turned into 50 miles per point, or 5,000 miles per 100 point).

Furthermore, I should mention that Tire Rack "did" have a CHEAPER A/A tire, but, they didn't have 5 in stock, so, I would have bought a cheaper A/A tire had they only had them in stock.

You have me here, and you have defined the WEAKNESS in both your selection method, and in mine.

Unfortunately, we don't have any reliable scientifically repeatable DATA for dry traction.

Let's look at that perfectly valid statement, and look at it scientifically (which this thread is all about):

  1. "cheap-arse Sumitomo or Kuhmo"
    • The price of a commodities has a LOT to do with the actual quality of the commodity; however, the price of a non-commodity can fluctuate wildly based on the PERCEPTION of the quality of the commodity.
  2. "same wet grip as a Pirelli P7"
    • The wet grip of an A tire is as good as the wet grip of any other A tire, assuming the test conditions are valid and applicable to the real world (and assuming test scores within the range for B < A < AA). Period. This is fact. You can't deny fact. This is what the science of accuracy and repeatability are all about.
    • You can deny the test. You can deny the applicability of the test to the real world. You can assume corruption and payoffs, etc., but, assuming that the test was valid, then an A tire stops in straight-line locked condition as well as any other A tire. Period.
  3. ABS relevance
    • Ah, you are now hitting upon the problem with the UTQG tests, which we all know and recognize, which is that they are extremely limited.
    • There is no reliable repeatable accurate data for what you seek.
    • Lord knows, I'm all for data. Good data. Real data. Scientific data. Repeatable data. Accurate data.
    • However, where are you going to get the DATA you seek?
  4. other factors
    • Again, you hit upon the weakness of UTQG selection methods, which is there is no data for the other things that matter.
    • But, how is YOUR system (or any one else's system) going to get that data?
    • Remember, I'm all for data. This thread is about choosing tires by the numbers, which means by the data.
But, where are you going to get reliable repeatable accurate usable applicable data for what you need?

Here in California, it doesn't rain from about May to November, usually not once. So, I agree, wet traction isn't the ONLY traction criterion to consider.

If you give me reliable DATA for dry braking (and the other factors you mention) that I can apply to my selection of all tires, then I'd use that in my selection "by the numbers".

But where are you gonna get this scientifically valid repeatable data for all tires you are considering?

Unfortunately, there is very little measured data for these characteristics.

The reviews are all over the map.
For example, here are the Tire Rack consumer summaries for the same "cheap" tires above:

The problem with reviews by Motor Trend, Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, etc., is that they are never inclusive of the tires you select.

There's nothing wrong with reviews, other than they're not always scientifically repeatable (what if, for example, they review using a Corvette and you're driving a Chevette?).

So, if you have a review for tires for a BMW sedan (which most E39s are), then those reviews would certainly be additional DATA that is applicable.

If one wants an approved BMW tire, which by BMW standards will stick to the road, will handle in the appropriate climate, will be good for the car's speed, etc. you need to look for the STAR. The STAR is BMW's stamp that the tire is approved for their vehicles. There are also tires from the same manufacturer, which will have the same size, name designation, etc, one with the STAR and the same seemingly identical tire without the star. These 2 "identical" tires are actually different, the one with the STAR costs more, and has a different rubber compound. Some stuff is in this linky, but for the more detailed intricacies, one has to do some searches.

you need to look for the STAR. The STAR is BMW's stamp that the tire is approved for their vehicles.
This is GREAT information!

Truth be told, I never heard of this BMW-approved 'star' before., and I love the idea of the Marketing tool (they're extremely clever people):

The best it can do is the 3 series, but that makes no sense and it finds nothing as a result.

While I deplore such gimmicks, I agree that it makes your average BMW mom and pop owner "feel" much safer already, knowing that their tire "meets BMW specifications", so, it's a good thing, overall (since presumably, BMW tests these things first); but it's no substitute for knowing the qualities of the tires by more objective (i.e., non BMW Marketing) methods.
