Sometime within the last hour, the previous post I was editing locked up, so all additions will have to be in a subsequent post (it opened 11/01 at 9:55pm and closed 12/31 somewhere around 8:30pm).

Along the vein of teaching to fish ...

  1. I clicked on the VERY best of E39 Links (SEE NOTE 1)
    • Note 1: It's more efficient when you set your Bimmerfest control panel to the maximum number of posts per page so a single search will find what you need. Click on your Bimmerfest "User CP -> Edit Options -> Number of Posts to Show Per Page -> 80 -> Save Changes".
  2. I pressed my operating system "find" hotkey (i.e., "control f" in Windows & Linux & "command f" on the Mac) (SEE NOTE 2)
    • NOTE 2: With Firefox, the slash (/) hotkey, in addition to "control f", does the same search, without the extra overhead.
  3. I typed the search term, e.g., "keyword(s)" (sans quotes) & the cursor focus jumped to the first match it found (SEE NOTE 3)
    • NOTE 3: On Windows & Linux, the "F3" hotkey will jump to the next find; "shift F3" will reverse the find; "enter" will open the current link. If the search fails, the search term will highlight in red. (Mac users, please let me know what keys you use.)
This quick search came up with a number of potentially decent related references.
Or, if I'm giving someone else instructions, here's what I cut and paste to help them fish:

  1. Click on the VERY best of E39 Links (or, in the E39 wiki common issues): (SEE NOTE 1)
    • Note 1: It's more efficient when you set your Bimmerfest control panel to the maximum number of posts per page so a single search will find what you need. Click on your Bimmerfest "User CP -> Edit Options -> Number of Posts to Show Per Page -> 80 -> Save Changes".
  2. Press your operating system "find" hotkey (i.e., "control f" in Windows & Linux & "command f" on the Mac) (SEE NOTE 2)

Once you've read those threads, if/when you still have questions, feel free to post "I did the search ... here's what I found ... but it still didn't help me ... and here's why I still need help". Someone will reply with the next steps.
CUT-AND-PASTE TEACH-to-FISH RESPONSE (written for this thread) FOR YOUR TYPICAL DTC QUESTION WITH NO DETAIL:

You must have your diagnostic trouble codes read!
It makes no sense to say "My SES/EML/CEL is on or is flashing and my engine is running rough ... what is the problem?".

Before you ask this type of question, you need to do at the very minimum, three things:

  • Have your diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) read
  • Google for what those DTCs indicate on the BMW E39
  • Attempt the solutions found from that googling effort
If, after performing those three tasks, you haven't solved the problem, then feel free to post for additional help.

When you post for additional help, you need to do three things:

  • Post the PCodes you found (actual and pending) & the description (nobody memorizes these things)
  • Describe what you found in your search (i.e., what other people did when they had the same codes in the same model)
  • Tell us what the results of the diagnostics you ran (i.e., what happened when you did what the diagnostic threads told you to do)
Additional advice:
In all USA states other than CA & HI, your local AutoZone auto parts store will read your DTCs for free; otherwise, for $25, you can purchase a DTC scanner to read your own codes.
- Cheapest CAN OBDII scanner on the net that reads DTCs, pending codes, & clears codes

Here is a list of so-called BMW-specific diagnostic trouble codes but beware; BMW P1 DTCs are computer specific!
- All OBDII codes, including BMW-specific P1xxx DTCs specific to the engine computer of each BMW (1) (2)

CUT-AND-PASTE TEACH-to-FISH RESPONSE FOR POOR SENTENCE STRUCTURE:
Sentences are like turn signals. They are not for you. They're for the other guy!
You may know where you are going. But the other guy has to figure out from your body language where you are headed. If you don't use your turn signals, the other guy has to guess where you're going. Same with sentences. It's a commonly accepted courtesy to use an uppercase letter to indicate the beginning of a sentence; and some sort of punctuation would be considered appropriate to indicate the type and end of a sentence. It's not for you; it's for us.

CUT-AND-PASTE TEACH-to-FISH RESPONSE FOR no MEIN-AUTO:
Provide the basic information in your personal information (look at mine, for example):

  • Mein auto: 2002 BMW 525i/M54 auto
  • List the DTCs found (e.g., P00m, P00n)
  • Also list the one-line description of those DTCs (don't force us look it up for you!)
  • Explain which debugging steps you followed (they all have 'em)
  • Explain your debugging test results

Here is a cut-and-paste response written to a 19-year-old college kid trying to explain why DIY works best.
And another one written to a 17-year old kid with a badly maintained BMW.
Yet another, to a 21-year old, who bought a BMW with unexpected issues who said "I can't work on a car".

Quote:
*******> ********>*******>********>*******>********>
For inspiration to the college kids & newbies, here's my first thread on Bimmerfest for the first repair ever. At that time, I didn't know about Bimmerfest (google brought me here),nor where to buy parts, nor about looking part numbers and nominal prices up on realoem (again, I found this only by googling), nor even what kind of car I had (I had never heard of the term "E39") nor what engine (I had never heard of "M54" before), etc.; and I had zero tools and even less mechanical knowledge. All I had was my brain and keyboard. Same things you have. And no money! (If I had lots of money, I would be tempted to farm the job out to someone else!) Googling, I instantly found Bimmerfest (you can't miss it). I joined up. I did my (at first, embarrassingly lousy) research. I posted newbie questions. I made mistakes. I asked dumb questions. I got ridiculed. I got pointers. I got ignored. I got helped (yes, the whole gamut). I did what you need to do I keep learning. The story starts here (how even a moron like me can do their own 4-wheel brake job).

So that an operating system "find" (control f) and browser "next" (F3) will work in this long thread, here are some best links, verbatim, from E38.org for the E39.
