I have a 2010 e61 and the cup holders drive me nuts.

My wife picks up two cups of coffee on the way to work each morning and as you know they are not in an ideal location. She then leaves them open all day which drives me nuts. The day will come when my son knocks it off getting in or out of the car with his backpack.

Has anyone come up with a mod to get some cup holders closer? Maybe on the side of the center console? Maybe tucked up by the seat heater buttons?

Thanks

Ok, this looks interesting only place I can think they would fit is in between console and seat, is that correct?
Edited and added eBay

Well since Amazon does not ship the above item to Canada found this on eBay for a third of Amazon price.

You have two cupholders? WTF? I only have one. I tell Frau Putzer she's the second cupholder.
Are you suggesting the son becomes both cup holders? Now there's an idea!
It actually sounds like the issues are with the wife and son, though the E60 cup holders are oddly located and fairly flimsy. I guess you could upgrade to an F10, they have the holders in the console, but people complain about those too.

Mine is an F10. But, with a manual transmission you only get one cupholder. I'm not sure what the smaller hole in front is for, maybe a garage door opener or a pack of cigarettes.

Historically, Germans hate cupholders. So, it's not something they put a lot of attention into.

I have a friend who is a militant socialist, to the point of hating rich people. Not being rich himself, he had to finance his BMW and then dial back his 401(k) contributions to make the payments. He was going to buy a Honda Accord. But, he got pissed when he saw that the owner of the VW-Honda dealership was driving an older, air-cooled 911. "Well, he obviously doesn't need my business!" He bragged about storming off the VW-Honda dealer's lot after seeing the 911, and then bought a $50k BMW. The owner of the BMW dealership usually drives a 7 Series.

My friend's hatred for rich people is only exceeded by his hatred of cupholders. He replaced the cupholder insert in his E46 330ci with the covered storage bin insert that came on German-market E46's.

My militant socialist friend and I went to a Porsche driving school about ten years ago. We were having breakfast at the track with two guys from Boston. Conversations during meals at driving schools usually start with talking about our cars. The older one had an E90. But, the younger guy had a 911. I thought "Uh-oh, there's going to be trouble here."

The 911 owner said that he'd always wanted a 911 but never could get one until recently. My socialist friend started to perk up, thinking me might have found a kindred soul, somebody who also bought a car that he really couldn't afford.

At the discussion went on, the 911 owner thrust the dagger into my socialist friend's heart...
"Yeah, every time I'd go car shopping I'd start out wanting a 911. But, I always got sidetracked and ended up with another Ferrari or Aston Martin." My socialist friend started turning red. Then, the 911 owner twisted that dagger. "The 911's much more practical as a daily driver than a Ferrari or Aston... but the cupholders suck."

My socialist friend got pissed at me, and we haven't seen each other for years. I'm not sure why, but this happened right about the time of my large inheritance and early retirement. He stopped coming to lunch with our group. Our regular Friday lunch destination restaurant is "The Trough - All You Can Eat Buffet." I regularly run into the retired owner of the VW-Honda dealership and his wife there. He's now driving a new Turbo S. We've been trying to get the socialist to come to lunch there with us, so I can show him that Turbo S in the parking lot, tell him who it belongs to, and say "I guess he really didn't need your business, after all."

Huh.....your friend being such an ardent socialist, you'd think he would aspire to more mundane plebeian motors like Dacia, Trabant, Lada, etc.

Yeah, it's the old story... "capitalism for me, socialism for you." "If I end up with a pile of money, it was due to skill and hard work. If you end up with a pile of money, it was due to deceit or dumb luck."

He's a socialist with a BMW and a Rolex. He was pissed when somebody had an $80k Porsche. But, when I questioned the prudence of shutting down his 401(k) contributions to make the payments on the $50k BMW his response was "I deserve a BMW." So, somebody else owning an $80k car means they stole it (through the inherently corrupt system of capitalism), but him owning a $50k car is an entitlement. :dunno:

He also owns a bunch of guns (really good ones, maybe 50 of them), and some silencers. He also self-adjusts the dosage of his anti-depressants. When management where we worked made a list of the employees they think are the most likely to go postal, he was probably #2. You can guess who was #1. :bigpimp:

My second-level supervisor announce my ascension up the totem pole at a senior level staff meeting years ago. Some other senior staffer asked "Isn't that the guy who we think is going to go postal one day?"

Somebody else in the meeting said "Yeah, but we're confident that he'll kill the right people."

Mutual friends who still keep in touch with him said that he recently bought a lathe. So, now he can make his own stuff and not have to fill out those pesky BAFTE forms.

He's literally a card-carrying member of MENSA. He was bored one day at work, not able to do anything because IT was installing his new computer. He wandered into my cube' and saw a scorched circuit board I had on my desk. It was part of a system I had just taken over the management of. I told him I had about 100 of them scorched like that one, and I had another 800 installed in deployed systems that I expected to catch fire any day. The previous managers of the system never could figure out what caused it. My friend asked for a schematic of the board, and then would come back every hour or so and ask for another schematic of board upstream of the scorched one. By the end of the day, he'd figured out what the other engineering team couldn't figure out in ten years.

The final act of the previous system managers was to propose a solution to the scorched circuit boards. By the time the proposal made it to HQ for approval I had the system and the authority to sign off on the proposal. Because of Cupholder Boy's insight, I looked like a genius when I shot the proposal down.

Years later, I was managing another project that needed highly skilled people and I was short of them. Cuphoder Boy was frustrated with his job. I tried to get him to come to work on my project, even just part-time if necessary. I know how the Aspberger's Syndrome types think. If they get interested in something, they focus on that only, and usually with great success. But, he couldn't stand being subordinate to somebody he considers inferior to himself... me.
