Hi, I get the ticking noise when the car idles for long time, with a bit of hard acceleration or driving in sports mode, I get rid of it all the time.hope this helps.

Other option is to rev the engine for couple of minutes at 3000 rpm.

Just got a 2005 X3 with 148K. Great shape. Runs perfect at start but when warm I get a ticking noise. Sounds like its up on top end like an injector. Also sounds like piston slap but wouldn't I hear that right away? Don't think it's lower end bearings from the sound.
