When I had new tires installed the dealer mentioned that the noise I was hearing from the old tires was from cupping. Now I know from Herr Putzer that cupping indicates a suspension issue. Is it something that new tires, alignment and balancing would have taken care of or am I likely to be talking about structural damage? Car only has 30,000 miles on it! Rides fine now with new tires.

Cupping can come from worn/bad suspension parts, misalignment, or tire/wheel imbalance. If you didn't have cupping I wouldn't have an alignment done for the new tires, but it might be something to consider.

Alignment was done with the new tires
Keep an eye on them - hope that makes a difference. Perhaps check condition of shocks/struts, although they should still have some life left at 30K miles.
