Well, I just got delivered yesterday, a set of 4 S-03's from Tirerack. As always, a delightful and painless purchasing experience. Gonna have them installed on Monday by BMW at which time the entire front end is going to undergo a thorough inspection to, as usual, attempt to ignore a bad retro steering rack and look for something else to replace or hold accountable. I understand the control arm bushings are now the lead suspect as per a test drive done yesterday by a technician. Apparently the third generation bushings are much improved and could need replacing under warranty. gimme a break.

Tire Logic.

My logic for replacing the tires when my ContiSport, with which I have never have really had a problem goes like this. The car has 11,000 miles on it. My lease (I had initially planned to buy it out at the end, but not with the current steering issue) is for 36 months and 36,000 miles. I figure that if I replaced the tires any later, I would be giving back unused tire back to BMW at the end of the lease. At $740 a set of 4 tires for the car, I want to get every single mile out of them. There's no way that the ContiSports could carry me through the end of the lease and if they were bare boned then BMW would charge me for replacements at the lease turn-in. So the ContiSports will go in the garage in the event that close to lease end these tires either get damaged or are really worn. In that case, I can slap the old tires back on and give the car back with plenty of tread left and avoid fines.

The second reason for switching was related to my previous post where I noticed a temperature variation in the performance of the steering system. I doubt tires are the ultimate cure. After all, the recent steering malady only started after the retro rack was installed, not before. Everybody reports that ContiSports are a mediocre tire at best, even BMW service. I figure it was somewhere to start.

I really want the rack replaced, but I really don't want to spend any money on a car I don't own. Actually, leasing worked pretty good in the sense that liability is low if your car has a defect or problem that cannot properly be corrected. Three year test drive sounds good.

That's exactly what I plan to do. I think I'm going to pony up for some Michelins or maybe the S-03's and throw the Dunlops in a corner until later on...This tire lottery thing is for the birds...:thumbdwn: :(
