Just got the call. I'm picking at 3:00 today :thumb: :D . The car came with Dunlop SP Sport 8080E. How are they compared to Contis or Michelin?

I requested Pilots Sports but the dealer says that they don't have any car that has them on the lot (so they can swap them) and although they asked for a swap at VPC that was not done .

I have been pretty happy with mine in terms of grip, etc. However a really strange wear pattern on the fronts required me to get a new pair after only 12k miles. The rears are still on after over 20k and just now need replacement. My new fronts still have a lot of tread on them which is frustrating since it is suggested to keep all 4 the same tire. :thumbdwn:

I would not go back to the 8080E since at least here they are considered to be an 'OEM' tire and carry a big sticker price as a result. It cost me about $1000 USD to replace the front two (after taxes) which I could have (and should have) bought a new set for. :bawling:

You may want to check replacement pricing on the 8080's in your area vs. the Michelin and Conti's available.

I liked my 17" SP8080's a lot! They were a quiet, comfortable tire (important in many urban areas because of crummy roads) esp. with a short sidewall.

I tried to replace them with the same but the costs were outrageous. I replaced them with the Sumitomo HTRZ2 which is a SP9000 caracas, for half the money. The HTRZ2 is a superior tire to the SP8080 in grip and performance, and probably in comfort in noise also. For the money, you can't beat the HTRZ2, but the SP8080E are good enough, IMO!

Quick update on SP8080E (after driving about 125 miles in my new baby; I intend to write a detailed report in another thread about the entire delivery/driving experince).

So far, what strikes me it's how quiet these tires are, unbeliveable!!! They're pretty comfortable too, although the sport suspention is unforgiving on bad roads as we have some around, here in Princeton. The thread looks impressive as well. After all, I'm pretty happy with them. The car itself is so nice that makes me forget anyway that I didn't get the Pilots :thumb:.

You forgot to mention their capabilities in the snow and ice. :lmao: 20 bucks says you'll need to buy winters this year, JP. :p

HTRZ2 Snow capabilities? Nonexistent! SP8080E were almost all-seasons by comparison. You are correct... I'm going to have to do something about them this winter. Or maybe not! We'll see! :p

I thought they were a great tire.

I went from 16" Yokohama AVS Sport to 17" 8080E's and the comfort and noise was night and day better with the lower profile 17"s. I would have bought a new set, except they were asking ridiculous money for them.

Enjoy them!

Wow if the HTRZ2's are worse than the 8080's in snow... I usually put my car away for the winter but one day I took the car and its 8080's out to impress a friend on a light dusting of snowy day. Oh my god! :yikes: It was a frightening exerience. The ATC couldn't even try and keep up with how these things were slipping. I also got stuck on a 2 degree incline.

Performance tires are not a winter option in Canada! Get the Blizzaks!

JP: I was looking into the HTRZ2 on the web but I got passed on to Dulop which passed me on to Goodyear?!?! :dunno: Where did you get your tires?

Cheers,

A.

We mock what we don't understand! :D (Name that movie! )

I've gone 3 winters in a row with summer tires in Toronto. Through a combination of staying at home, taking my wife's truck and just braving it... I've made it through 3 winters with only 1 harrowing experience. Try SP8080E's in 6-8 inches of snow! I thought I was going to die! :(

The HTRZ2's are worse! I'm going to have to cave this winter and get snows!

They aren't available in too many places. I had to phone around ALOT for them.

This guy in Toronto actually does business with tirerack.com in the US and source them from there for good pricing. You might be able to hammer out a deal with him. Ask for "Dave" and tell him "JP" recommend him to you. Dave's a nice guy and the owner of the place. I ended up paying $800CDN+Taxes installed for the set (staggered: 225/45/17+245/40/17)
