New to me E83 X3 has recurring "Too lean, bank1" and "Too lean bank 2". Before I just start throwing parts at it, how do I know if I need the Intake boot, Fuel filter, or The CCV??

Anyone been through this? PS,.....I no longer have gauges for testing fuel pressure?

which engine do you have ????.......the following links are based on the generation of M54 etc engines in the saloons and X's......they give good basic explanation of the lean codes etc ....applies to all kinds of vehicles new and old....BUT ....if you have the later N52 engine there are some differences

Im thinking that the fog machine shown there is intended for Halloween effects, not smoke testing an engine. Cant imagine a computer fan would be able to generate enough force to stat pushing fog out of small crackes and splits etc.

Anyone actualy used this fog machine to smoke test an engine?

yes.....the fan push can be adjusted depending on what size you can muster.......or ....you can upgrade to this.....

Take off intake boot and check for leaks. Easy.

If you have over 60k on your fuel filter, you need a fuel filter.

Check for strong suction at the oil fill cap.

Yeah, I dont know when the filter was last changed so ordered a new one about a week ago. Should have it today. Also ordered a new intake boot and have it ready to go on the car.

Ive watched that video a while back,....have seen what looks like a better version using a plastic paint can,...so,....no insulation required on the electric.

Sold my compressor about a month ago (im moving) so,...think I may try the cigar and hose version.

I actually have been through this very same problem with my 04 E83. It was lagging horribly in horsepower and guzzling gas like no other. I took it to my mechanic and got the same reading and it ended up being the intake boot. The opening and closing mechanism had broken and could no long open to intake the air it needed to run correctly. It turned out to be around a 800 dollar fix my friend. And that's with 20/hr labor.
