Agree, lots of previous posts. Good additional instructions/FAQs for hitch installation on the other site too.
I looked at 2 or 3 different aftermarket hitches (eg UHaul, Reese, Hidden Hitch, etc), and at the BMW hitch. There was no comparison in the construction. Not just the heavier BMW crossmember, but the replacements for the bumper shock absorber struts that are included in the BMW kit so you don't collapse the 5 mph bumper on the hitch. I wanted to tow with it; for a bike carrier you would likely be fine with an aftermarket hitch.
In terms of the wiring harness, I wouldn't suggest that you use anything but the BMW kit. Even if you do go aftermarket, spring for the BMW wiring kit. Yes, I have used lots of UHaul kits and similar for other vehicles. In this case, it is just not worth the trouble in case of any future problems with electrics. These vehicles are complicated enough without adding untested aftermarket electronics into the mix.
I bought the combination kit (BMW hitch and wiring harness in one box). It was cheaper than the two separate parts.
I installed it myself; easy job if you are handy or have someone to work with who is. Took me 5 hours, working methodically. Everything fit perfectly, which was what I was paying for. If you do need it installed, you could buy the BMW kit and take it to any independent garage, it isn't complicated and the kit includes instructions
