I have a 1995 BMW 530i. I hit the gas one day and the engine revved up to 5,000 and then the tranny (after slipping) kicked in. Trans program was displayed and the car is stuck in third gear. When I turn the car off all is fine until the car hits 3rd gear. That's it, it displays "trans program" and sticks in 3rd. If I put it in manual mode when it's cold, then I can ride the first two gears, but if I put it in 3rd, that's it.

Mechanic wants 3,000 dollars to rebuild.

I ordered the speed sensor and trans filter.

Please Help. I love my BMW!!!!!

RE: trans program

I'm assuming that you have the A5S 310Z trans. It sounds like you're transmission controlle module has left this world. Where I live only the dealer could replace it, for about $1000. Two years later my trans doesn't want to up shift under "fast conditions" unless I hit 80 mph or redline. If you're transmission is shifting fine then it's a computer problem. These tranmissions are very electronic (and problematic), so be prepared for more little quirks. Good thing the engines are bullet proof and the car looks great.

Thanks for the tip, but...

Thanks for the tip, but...what do you mean shifting fine? It does shift fine between the first two gears but as soon a s it hits the 3rd, trans program.

Either way thanks alot.

530 trans program

The car has 130,000. I believe it's the valve body. After researching the issue, I don't think I will pay 3,000 dollars to have some one rebuild, when I can do that myself. So, i'll order the kit and wait for a nice day this spring. Thanks for your input everyone.

You NEED A NEW TRANNY, its not the module, this happens because the whole transmission is operated by fluids , we took apart a transmission with a similar problem only 1, and 2nd, we found a good handfull of "confetti" metal pieces in the pan.
