Excessive play in the Guibo Joint can cause it as well. I'd also have them check all the motor and transmission mounts.

dhillon88 - Is it a Sport, or did you black it out? Also, lowered, or just Sport suspension? Looks bad ass, brother. Hope it works out.

Did the guibo not too long ago by the dealer, I think it cost me 800 and change, but most folks felt that it could be done by an indy for maybe half that figure....saw the part on eBay for 150 at one point....it's not a big fix. Of course it's 4months later an my entire transmission is gone! Getting it replaced as we speak.

UR car looks sick man! If I had a black car, that's exactly how it would look.

In my case, I didn't think so, the problem was that the guibo was completely shot so it had to be replaced. At such low miles, u shouldn't really have a guibo problem unless ur driving like a bat outta hell. Try the transmission reset, where ur pressing the pedal for 25 seconds and see if that helps. Inevitably, the transmission in these cars are bound to fail, there is no transmission for with these bad boys....

I think its the guibo, i had the same issue, changed mines at about 60kish miles, i heard they last about 50k miles or so. An indy can do it, ur just dropping half thr exhaust, i paid about 300 with parts.

Hi, not sure if you had the problem fixed yet.

I live in Australia and bought a 735i with the same problem. Took it back to the dealer with the same problems you had, they replaced the filter pan and seal and changed the oil as it had a leak. reprogrammed it with little change. Sent it back reprogrammed it again set the adaptions , still no change when I got it back. They told me cant fix it and it required new gearbox at $10000. Had a heartattack. I contacted a transmission specialist in my state that was recommended to me. He rebuilt the mechatronics on the transmission $3500. The car still did it now and then only in first and only when braking harder than normal. Took it back to the transmission place replaced the Guibo joint and it fixed the problem. I think the guibo joint was the problem all along and the transmmission wasn't the problem. The transmission bloke told me that the gearboxes are reasonally bullet proof. If there is a problem with them the oil will smell like it is burnt. My car has done 140000 kms and when they took the mechatronics out it was still like brand new. Changes gear nice and smooth now. He also said to make sure the transmission fluid was changed 80 - 100000 kms. Luckily the dealer picked up the cost of all this. Hope this helps. :)

dhillon88,

You should check out two service bulletins before replacing the tranny.

SI B 24 17 07 - for vehicles produced 03/2003 - 08/2003:
situation - a clunk noise during a 2-1 downshift while driving slowly to a rolling stop, or during a load reversal
fix - The ONLY repair is to inspect the driveshaft guibo coupling as describes in SI B 24 14 07... no EGS software changes are required.

SI B 24 14 07 - for vehicles produced 10/2002 - 03/2005
situation - One or more situations: a clunk while rolling slowly to a stop and downshifting 2-1; load reversal causes a clunk; clunk while shifting forward or reverse gear from park or neutral
fix - inspect and replace the guibo; clear the transmission adaption values

If you are only experiencing these symptoms, you may only need to replace the guibo. If other tranny things are happening besides what is described, please post. If the car was made up to 02/2003, then hard 3-2 and or 2-1 downshift and/or harsh downshift when accelerating is also described in SI B 24 17 07 but with more options for fix. Same bulletin also describes another fix for 09/2003 - 02/2005 vehicles. If you're in the sweet spot (03/2003 - 08/2003), then a worn guibo and adaption values may be the only thing wrong.

I am experiencing ONLY the issues mentioned in the two following service bulletins, however I have figured out a sequence that eliminates the clunk when moving from park to drive and made the 2-1 downshift appear to be less harsh... details below.

SI B 24 17 07 - for vehicles produced 03/2003 - 08/2003:
situation - a clunk noise during a 2-1 downshift while driving slowly to a rolling stop, or during a load reversal

A little experiment:
When parking the car, shift from D to N; holding foot on brake, hit the Parking Brake button (NOT P on column); release brake pedal and hit P to put the car in Park. When starting car next time put foot on the brake and put in N - no hard clunk! Put in D - no hard clunk! Release Parking Brake and go. When rolling to a stop the 2-1 harsh downshift is barely noticeable and sometimes nonexistent. The car shifts great throughout the gear range. It sounds weird but this sequence has worked consistently over the last few days. I now plan to first replace the guibo soon and not change the transmission fluid.

Lotastyle
