My '08 335i has just blown it's 2nd pair of turbos in less than 95k miles. The first set was replaced at 32k under warranty. My understanding at the time was that the replacement would be covered for another 50k from that point. However, once BMW extended turbo warranty to 82K I assumed my replacement would also be extended from the 50k to the 82k. BMW NA is saying that it expired at the 82k mark (32+50), though they are willing to pick up cost of parts and dealer will pick up $1k of labor leaving me to pay $1,500. Has anybody had this issue or have any thoughts on how to handle. I appreciate your help.

Warranty was extended to 82K miles, period. Not sure I understand your question. The fact that your turbo was replaced does not effect the 82K mile warranty. The warranty expires when the car gets 82K miles on it, if they are offering you help beyond that, grab it!

Not crazy, but maybe just a misunderstanding I suppose. $1,500 is not so bad IMO for this situation.

I may drop almost that much on maintenance on my beater truck as soon as the end of this week. Did fluid and filter changes on the wholesale level, replaced all front ball joints (and upper arms, no choice there), a couple of bumper brackets, self supplied PCV valve install, maybe finally deciding to fix an ABS sensor issue (it's a primitive tech here, so I didn't decide to do it last year), etc. It appears my radiator cap might have a tiny seal leak, and am thankful that the condensation evidence on the water pump is not due to a failing water pump. Last place I took my truck in for a steering rack did a sh!tty job on the boots, but I'm not paying to fix that unless I decide to get a whole new rack to begin with. Alignment now too, etc. If I ever have to replace a turbo on the BMW while out of warranty, I'd be satisfied with that price. It could be a lot worse I imagine.

thats not how warranties work. they cover the car as a whole, not the individual part, so having a part replaced does not reset the clock.
bmw extended the coverage to 82K total vehicle miles.

They offered you a reasonable deal and this may help reduce the sting a little more: Your replacement turbos will be covered by the BMW parts warranty. This is separate from the vehicle limited warranty (new or CPO) and covers genuine BMW parts installed by a BMW dealer for 12 months and 12,000 miles (whichever comes first).

The parts warranty covers parts and labor to replace the failed, covered parts. The time and mileage clocks start from the date & mileage on the invoice and apply only to the parts installed for that service. (It applies to over-the-counter parts purchases too but labor is excluded in that case.)

So if your new new turbos crap out within the parts warranty, you get NEW new new turbos free. :confused: :D

You don't have cpo correct? If so I'd be a little ticked (although 1500 for bmw turbos is an insanely good deal). In essence he assumed each set of turbos was covered for 82. Either way good deal and I'd thank the dealer.

Did the dealership happen to tell you what the issue with the turbos was?
I think the dealership is being fair with you.
How about telling us how you use it so we might be able to give you some thoughts on how to prolong life on those bad boys.

Correct, it's very important to be up to temp before you WOT!

I'm even wondering why it's not in the manual and even better using dash engine warning lights the way M3s use to(not sure if they still do). :confused:

I think you got a fantastic deal! No charge for parts (from BMWNA) and the dealer knocks off $1000 of the labor ... wow! No complaints there...

Like fun2drive & KT, mighty curious about exactly what failed on the turbos.

Mind you, replacement mighta been a shotgun blast. Or, could be a part problem so diff to access that turbo replacement; refurbishment elsewhere was the cost effective way to go.

Interested in wastegate issues in particular. They ARE adjustable! But one's a bugger to do even that....

With my JB4 installed I have the ability to disable the turbos and go to an economy mode. What exactly does this do to turn off (or bypass) turbos and is this bad for the engine? The car still runs pretty good although definitely about 60% of normal power but does not suck gas. However, not fun to drive at all this way :)

Simplifying:

Turbos work by converting exhaust gas motion into rotating motion (via turbine), and that rotating motion drives a compresser fan. The compressor fan pushes more air into the engine, and thus more HP. When people talk about 'boost' pressure, it's the forced air they are describing.

There's a part, called a wastegate, that diverts most exhaust gas away from the turbo's turbine. When the gate is fully open (aka bypassing gases), the turbine doesn't spin much, and the turbo adds no real boost. Less air, less HP. Basically, the wastegate is the throttle for the turbo.

The wastegate is computer controlled, and one of the main things tuning packages such as JB4 focus on. There's no harm done by bypassing turbos, in fact it will likely prolong the life of your engine due to lower boost pressures.

Does the warranty extension apply to the 2011 335D?
No. The warranty extension mentioned here is on the wastegates for the two turbos on an N54 gas engine.

can anybody link me to any official BMW document that extends the N54 turbo warranty to 82K miles. My dealer yesterday insisted that there is no such warranty applicable to my 2012 E93 335IS. I have the cold start wastegate rattle and now the car has suddenly started consuming oil. Not looking forward to pulling those puppies out, though i do have the rattle repair kit and the so-called turbo rebuild kits to replace the oil seals.
