I have a 2001 330i w/sp. Last week I put the car on a truck to the dealer after I heard metal on metal while traveling down the highway. The dealer determined it was the differential and that it needed to be replaced. I picked up the car Monday night and yesterday evening while driving home I heard the same noise again. I brought it into the dealer first thing this morning. Has anyone else had this problem. I can't imagine I am doing anything wrong in my driving that was cause two differentials to fail. I even told myself to treat it as a new car when I got it back, and not go over 100mph, to allow the new diff to break in properly. And for the record, on the service order, it noted that it was a refurbished diff they installed. Thank BMW!

They gave you a "refurbished" diff?? Whoa - thats unbelievable!!

I'd get on the phone to BMW NA right away! Sorry to hear that you've had these problems...

On the other hand, this gives you the excuse to buy the Dinan 3.15 diff.

Unfortunately, all BMW major components are remanufactured parts. (i.e., steering racks, pumps, transmissions stereo head units, etc., and, etc.)

Sounds like the dealer just screwed up installing it. Maybe they forgot to fill it w/ fluid (I wouldn't put it past a dealer mechanic to do something like that).
