This pic was taken at a BMW dealer in Germany, after a senior BMW driver heard some 'weird' sounds coming from the wheels and has his car towed to the dealer.

And the service guy saw that.......

BTW, what happened to the wear sensor? And when it "fixed itself" he must have assumed everything was okay.

Wear sensor? Even if it had one and the person actually paid attention to it (doubtful), it only tells you when the pad is gone, not half of the rotor!

Right. So once one side of the rotor is gone, the sensor would not be able to complete the circuit and would quit lighting up. Problem solved.
