Correction: Dan Gorell of Strategic Visions calls the new 7 Series the "Bavarian Aztek," a reference to the much-maligned Pontiac sport-utility vehicle that has been called "butt ugly" for its gawky hindquarters... :p

Oh come on... It makes a MUCH better subject line when you take a little bit of license with the specific facts. Still, in today's USA Today, it's called the "Bavarian Aztek". Yes, editorially, the USA Today did not make the reference nor did any USA Today staff member. Still, close enough to use as a "headline".

Other interesting paragraphs in that article... :thumb:

Well, perhaps some were quietly displeased. "It's awfully busy back here," says Andrew Gooding, a Birmingham, Mich., banker who is unimpressed with the car's new rear design. Even then, it's loyalty that will likely keep him in the fold. "If it drives like a BMW, then I'll be OK with it," he says.

Back in the 1980s, Bob Lutz, who is new product chief at General Motors, worked for BMW. Today, he says, he constantly tests his company against BMW for "integrity of execution."

"They are about performance, and everything they do reflects that," says Lutz, who says he wants GM's Pontiac executives to study BMW as it refocuses its image and product line. (I know you E65 haters will give me $hit for that :D)

But neither criticism nor compliments sway Panke, BMW's CEO-in-waiting. "If you are going to lead, it means you will be out front," he says, "and alone, at times."

Edit:

The spy pix of the upcoming 6 disgust even me though... :(

That was a pretty good read. Scary quote:

"With all those new products coming, says Bangle, BMW has no choice but to "stretch its design language." :eeps:

Wonder what that means..... (Teej biting nails for the first time in his life)

Interesting comment from CEO to be Helmut Panke:

Asked if he has any serious concerns, Helmut Panke, who is about to become chairman of BMW in April, pauses several seconds before answering: "What worries me is that our organization will think we can do no wrong given what we accomplished in such a tough year."

Sounds to me like he might not be so thrilled with all of the Bangle-ization going on...

Most definitely. That's my understanding as well... And he's absolutely right if that's what he meant... :yikes:

The Rover debacle is the only obvious blot on BMW's recent record. But it's distant enough to give running room to Panke, who is tall, lean and silver-haired and has an ear for rock bands U2 and REM.
This Panke guy shows some real promise! :thumb: :thumb:

Bangle justifies the ugly rear end by pointing to "fuel economy" reasons on such a heavy car. Yah, E65 owners really worry about those fuel consumption numbers impacting their pocket books. Riiight!

Anybody else notice how Bangle doesn't seem to come across in print very well (sort of like his designs)?

In the Roundel article he babbled and gave some funky explanations about the reasons for the E65 design, and the dude basically was rambling incoherently.

Personally, I think all of the critical pressure is getting to him. Most artsy type people are sensitive to criticism, and don't take it too well.

The dude may be 'cracking' under pressure.

It goes much deeper than that... Granted, 7 owners shouldn't be worried about how much they'll spend on gas, but anything they can do to help improve fuel consumption should be welcomed (i.e. new CAFE standards, environment, etc.).

Note: I'm not asking you to like the E65. Just bringing some other aspects to your attention, regardless of whether they're BS (i.e. fuel consumption really improved?) or not when it comes to the E65.

I didn't know this:

" . . . Bangle, who was born in Ohio and raised in Wisconsin before moving to Europe 20 years ago."

Doh! You guys won't hold that against us board members from Wisconsin will ya?:)
You guys deserve a new license plate that reads: "Wisconsin... Land of Bangle" :lmao:

It appears that Bangle is really taking it in the rear.
