Interesting story about car dashboards looking like cockpits, etc.

"BMW says it will make iDrive standard in all future models, including the bottom-priced $23,000 1 Series."

:tsk: :yikes: :dunno:

uh-oh, time to hop off the bmw boat:(
Just because of iDrive? Don't you think that's a bit extreme? Think about it... Maybe, by the time you decide it's time for a new car, all cars will be equipped with some sort of iDrive. MB's already are (i.e. Command, which is even more confusing/less intuitive). Anyway, I'll let you in a little secret: You don't need it to perform basic functions nor drive the car...

Well I'm gonna wait till I see the redone, simplified (supposedly) version on the new 5. And the 1-series I-drive will probably be even simpler, I hope. Obviously, the number of functions on the 1-series I-Drive will be fewer compared to the 7, which should make things easier.

As long as they keep the major functions separate with "normal" controls, like the radio and HVAC, I'll be happy.

I read that article on-line this morning (after playing with the I-drive simulator at Sterling BMW for around 20 minutes) and was shocked. I'm a friggen' IT consultant at PwC and didn't find the I-drive to be very intuitive at all. I sure hope the real thing is better than that silly simulator.

:-(

Doh! I'm an idiot.

What's wrong with that?:dunno: I played around with i-drive, and despite the numerous amounts of controversies regarding its design and "supposedly lack of" user-friendless, I'm sure once you get used to it, it won't be so bad. Even though we love our cars (or some), we can't deny developing techonlogies forever.

Just to put in my two cents. BMW, please leave the radio and HVAC controls alone. They work perfectly the way they are. These controls are too frequently accessed for i-Drive. Most of us want one button control for these things. Leave i-Drive for the navigation system and communication system.
