USB 3.0 memory sticks are 100% backward compatible with the USB 2.0 that is used on this BMW. They have the benefit of being MUCH faster to create on your PC/Mac than USB 2.0.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_3.0#Overview

I use USB 3.0 128gb flash drives all the time. The key is to format the "sticks" correctly.

I recommend you format the drive FAT32.

Here is my cheat sheet for BMW

FAT32 - Works Great - 64 gb is the largest I have personally tried
exFAT - Works Great - 128gb is the largest I have personally tried

NTFS - Will not work at all!
ext3 - Will not work at all!
ext4 - Will not work at all!
HFS+ - Will not work at all!
HFS+ - Journaling - Will not work at all!
RSX-11 - RSTS - Can't fit an RL01 into a USB slot
CP/M Micropolis Double Sided Double Density - No luck so far
Apple 13 and 16 sector 5-1/4 - No luck so far

Here is the list of Sticks available on Amazon that I have personally tried:

  • PNY Turbo 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - P-FD128TBOP-GE
  • SanDisk Cruzer Fit 64 GB
  • SANDISK SDCZ60-128G-A46 Cruzer Glide
  • Transcend 64GB JetFlash 710 USB 3.0 Flash Drive (TS64GJF710S) - This is my current favorite, I have ordered about 20 of these.

If you need anymore information I am happy to help.
