Steps

1. Find a recent update of daten files
2. Import the daten into WinKFP following 'WinKFP Import'. https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=325801&d=1337480801
3. Follow BaliDawg's procedure, but don't flash yet. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpost.php?p=16587038&postcount=56
4. Check the ZUSB shown in INPA for your engine under AIF.

 

5. Go to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/ and enter the last 7 digits of your VIN. Under 'Engine electrical system' 'Programmed DME control unit' find the one for your car (it should have a red box around it). Note the last 7 digits of the part number.

 

6. Now compare with the ‘Prog. ZB-Update’ info from step 3 above. The “from UIF” should match the assembly number from INPS (step 3), and the “Update” number should match the RealOEM number (step 5).

 

7. Unplug daytime running lights. Unless you have LED, it will save some current draw.
8. Verify the current draw is well within the capability of your charger. Preferably half or less.
9. Click ‘Yes’ to proceed to flash.

 

10. You will get confirmation when it’s completed.

 

Notes:
***8226; This was done on E46, but other models of similar vintage should be close to the same.
***8226; Unplugged the daytime running lights and current dropped from below 10 A to less than 5 A.
***8226; Kept the doors closed the whole time so interior lights didn***8217;t come on (they draw 2 ***8211; 3 A).
***8226; Load was less than 5 A for the whole time on my 30 A charger and volts above 14 V.
***8226; So for an E46, a 10 A charger would be fine if you verify current draw.
***8226; Took about 45 minutes for E46.
***8226; If you followed the step to ***8220;uncheck all UIF checkboxes***8221; in step 3, then the VIN entry box will be disabled, and the step ***8220;Enter VIN***8221; does not apply.
***8226; With UIF unchecked, it won***8217;t write the info, and when checking INPA later, it will still report that it has the old version, even though it has been updated.
