I've been using the suction cups, tucked up to the right of the mirror, since the car was new. Works fine, essentially unnoticeable outside the car.

They look good and probably work well if the cops arent using laser.

$89 is a little Ridiculous for me.
Make the V1 really stand out to be stolen & blocks the a good portion of the view.
Been using suction cup mounts for over 10 yrs in many cars w/out any problems, so far.
Looks OK too...

Nick, Is your power hard-wired? It kinda looks like it is.... That's what I'd like to do. And Valentine provided the wire-taps, etc. My suction cups seem to release about once a week though, and I'm worried about ripping out a hard-wire tap while the radar detector falls - or just just breaking the detector!

Have any secrets to making the suction cups work for 10 years? Would love to hear them.....

When you hardwire the V1 plug the end of the cable into an RJ11 coupler like the one pictured below and attach it to the top of the windshield with double sided foam tape.

Then use a short RJ11 cable to run from the coupler to the V1.

I have done this on several of my cars. If the suction cup mount comes loose the V1 will hang from the cable. If the connectors on the short cable break (the plastic locking tab on RJ11 cables are prone to snapping off) the cable is easily replaced.

The suction cups will hold better if the windshield is very clean and if you spray them with, or wipe on some glass cleaner.

The RJ11 parts are standard telephone connectors, work fine with the V1 and are readily available at Radio Shack and other stores.

An additional benefit is that when you remove the V1 from the car there is no wire left hanging as you can also remove the short cable. If you remove the suction cup mount and wipe off the round marks there will be no indication that there is a V1 in the car.

I have 2 V1's installed in 6 diff cars over the past 12 yrs.
Paid a local stereo shop $20 - 29 (plus a black 4 wire phone cord) to directly hard wire into the overhead light console. They wire it so that it comes on & shut off whenever I start/stop the car. Works great.
I order an extra set of suction cups years ago. They seem to last the 3 - 4 yrs each, or w/ change of car.
Of course, when I first called V1 company, they don't recommend this install medthod & wants you to buy their wiring kit.
But it works great so far...

I agree. I'm going with Cal's link. That is really cool. I live in Virginia. I can't have the V1 in view.

I lived in VA for 10+ years, and always had the following V1 setup.
  1. I have used the hardwired route into a switched outlet in the sunroof/light area. I've always used a black RJ11, but I like the RJ11 coupler suggestion from captainaudio.
  2. I've always used the suction cups to mount the V1 to the windshield. Saliva seems to make a good seal for years.
  3. Since I lived in VA, I used to mount the V1 directly behind the rear view mirror, but to the right so the rear facing radar and laser sensor can "see" rearwards
  4. To see the alerts, I've also always had a V1 concealed display mounted in or near my instrument binnacle, but accessible so I can mute audio.
Never had any tickets for this setup. And I actually got pulled over once in VA in an M3 cab, with the top down, no issues.
Now I did get 3 tickets for radar detector illegality, but that was with pre-V1 Escort/Passport and VG-2 sniffer a long long time ago, and been with V1 ever since. Once for doing 5 below speed limit in right lane, but I had the Passport windshield mounted with a coiled cord in a loaner. Loaners/rentals are a PITA, since I have no idea where my cig lighter unit is when I need it. But never for a speeding ticket.
My car buyers have always insisted I leave the complete V1 setup in place. When I get home, I'll post some pics.

I've attached another pic of V1 w/ phone cord direct wired to the light console.
Of all my cars, the V1 fits & looks best in the 3series, esp w/in the "notch" of the upper windshield.
Pic shows V1 from below view to show the cord, but at eye level, it fits in perfectly...

Now deciding for e90 whether to go with another V1 or Escort SmartRadar/Live, since mainly city/commute driving. Then again with Escort Live, I could run both a V1 and Escort Live on long hauls...
