have a 2003 M3 with 68,000 miles. I was just told by my dealership that the Vanos Adjustment unit needs replacing at a cost of $3,000 plus labor. I was experiencing a lurching motion in first gear especially in sport mode. The problem then started to occur in 2nd gear. Has anyone else had this happen and what did you do about it?

Yes. Had to replace my entire unit as well (2700 parts and labor). Mine had 75K at the time. If you don't trust the dealer, then get a second opinion.

Yea i trust my guy, he recommened that I wait until Spring, he knows I'm storing the car anyway and during that time he is going to try and get me additional assistance thru BMW, my sales lady also said she would look into it, if not try to get me more for a trade in if thats the route I decide to take. I'm not sure I love the car when its running good.
