Vanos Solenoid OEM or Aftermarket

Thinking about changing my VANOS Solenoid and I obviously know the choice to go with when wanting to purchase parts and I tend to stick to OEM however, I wanted to get others feedback on whether there is a difference between the aftermarket (ebay, amazon) solenoids compared to OEM.

There is a huge price difference with the OEM (2 for $320 on FCP) and aftermarket Solenoids (2 for $40~). Anyone have any experience with the aftermarket solenoids?

Are you replacing because you have symptoms of it failing? Fault codes? Mine are original at 155,000 miles.

I got a 30ff the other day while on the freeway. I have changed my vacuum hoses a few months back to make sure there are no leaks from the old hoses. I don't hear any rattling from the wastegate even though I'm at 92k miles. I tested the wastegate by unplugging each of the vacuum lines and looking to see if any rattling stops. heard nothing different.

today on cold start there was a noticeable vibration with the vehicle. So from what I read it's a good idea to either clean the solenoids or just replace them all together. Hoping this may resolve my issue. Right now I'm thinking of just cleaning them to see if I notice much of a difference before buying new ones.

You could inspect, clean, and test them. I have seen some diy videos. If you do anything with them you should replace the o-rings while you are there. When I pulled mine out at 154,000 miles the solenoids looked new.

Likely new vanos solenoids are not going to fix 30ff. I have new solenoids etc., 30ff is probably because turbos are toast.
However if you do want to replace your vanos, try rock auto and look for standard motor VVT207. They are made in germany works great and great price, probably same factory as oem.

Well reading the Standard Motor warranty page doesn't mention anything made in germany.

but i ordered a pair anyway. and the pair that I got look used. Are they supposed to be refurbished? as if it was a core return for refurb? More alarmingly, the OHMS reading doesn't seem to be in spec between 10.7 and 11.2. They both are at 10.0 and 9.99 ohms. Can anyone chime in ? i got the specs from the youtube below. they _almost_ seem flimsily made and when i tested with a 9V battery it doesn't respond with a snap like my originals and they are at 10.6 ohms which seem to be below spec. Really thinking about returning them to RockAuto.

Any input from you guys would be appreciated.

I bought a set of Standard Motor Products solenoids from rockauto.com last year. They are OEM for fraction of the price.

This thread is the only review I can find regarding the VVT207 Standard motor Products solenoid. 2 guys said they worked here. SO I just purchased 2 from 1A Auto, was going to use RockAuto but shipping was faster with 1A. They had them around the same price, got two for $169. Basically half the price than FCP Euro's OEM. I have an 07 328i E91 with the N52 with a 110K... Mine are starting to go. Cleaning them isn't cutting it anymore. Did the cleaning trick for a year.
By the pictures, these actually look of better quality than any other ones out there so hope you're right.
I guess I'll come back with an update for other people on the interweb.

The VANOS solenoids seem like a tough part to diagnose without testing them outside the vehicle. How does one tell if it is the solenoids versus the age or mileage of the engine?

since cleaning the solenoids my engine definitely feels smoother. idle is much better.

I'm wondering is there a reason to replace them? if all it takes for them to be cleaned, any reason to buy brand new ones?

I've seen some that can get some sludge on them but that's a different issue. They are a fairly easy part to inspect and troubleshoot. What did yours look like removed?

OEM - ECS Tuning

I replaced both of my Vanos solenoids and have noticed smoother idle and better gas mileage. Sometimes at startup, the idle would hiccup as if it were correcting itself. Well that is all gone now. I have noticed 1.5 MPG more as well.

I bought the OEM ones from ECS Tuning for $130 each. Also, they were easy to replace.

I have 177K on 2010 BMW 535i N54 motor.

yea this was the answer i was looking for. i didnt find anything physically wrong with them. once cleaned and put back the my idle and response have been very noticeable. so i wondered if replacing them was even required.

Hi,
so just to update, my original vanos solenoids registered 10.6 each on OHMS and seem to be under spec - can someone confirm? . The new ones were 10.0 and 9.99 and when tested with a 9V battery the actuator seemed pretty weak. I returned them to RockAuto.

.6 ohms difference is pretty inconsiquential. I would be more concerned if the reading was off by 25% or more. The fact that the plungers seemed to be sluggish in their movement indicated an issue such as a worn solenoid or really old stock that's gummed up or worse, a used part being passed off as new.
