Hi fellow Bimmers

I'm a newbie to bimmerfest and happy to be here. I picked up my new 2012 335i a few weeks ago. After pairing my iPhone to the Bluetooth I tired the voice dial but nothing happens when I pressed the voice command button on the steering wheel. I asked the delivery specialist at the dealership and he said that even without Navigation system, it should allow you to voice dial and said to bring it into service. Dropped it off this morning and service said that without Navi, there isn't voice dial. Does anyone have a 2012 without Navi / extended Bluetooth? Can you voice dial?

Wow -- are you saying that, even with Enhanced Bluetooth, that you can't use the steering wheel button to do voice dialing or access Siri? Even my Kenwood Stereo in my current Prius lets me access Siri by pressing the voice dial button.

What exactly are the "few functions" that iDrive allows when you press the steering wheel button? Is voice dialing one of them (IE -- "Call John Smith Mobile")?

Thanks!

The dealership is checking into this ... Will post once I hear back. Yes I can use Siri but its disappointing that I may have a button in the car that has no function ... Not what you expect from bmw

It does, but not that easily. At least on my 2010 5-series, you say something like

You: PHONEBOOK
Car: Phonebook
You: SMITH JOHN
Car: Did you say SMITH JOHN?
You: YES
Car: Number of the entry (it shows you all the numbers associated with John Smith)
You: 2 (assuming 1 is the home number and 2 is the mobile)
Car: Did you say 2?
You: YES

It's like defending your PhD dissertation - by the time you get through that, you might as well just drive over and visit ole John and give him a piece of your mind in person. In reality, it doesn't take a lot of time, but it's needlessly complex.

My 2006 E90 330i with Bluetooth/BMW Assist but no nav has voice dialing. I can see BMW Assist/Enhanced Bluetooth being required, but I can't see the function being totally unavailable.

Exactly!

Just push and hold down the home button on the iPhone and say "Call John Smith on his mobile"... done.

Now, if BMW would ever reprogram the damn steering wheel button to actually activate Siri we'd be in nirvana. But, that ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the feedback. With the radio on, when I press the voice button, the radio does not interrupt. I have low expectations - if I could say "dial 123-456-7890 that would be good enough.

Yeah, at the very least it should give a beep then you can say Dial and the number and it should do that. Check out page 230 in the owner's manual.

Well I got my car back today and was told that the voice button does nothing. Voice command is only available with Navi. I am still not totally convinced. They told me that they checked other 2012 models without Navi and they all did not have voice command. If anyone has a 2012 3 series without Navi or extended Bluetooth, please let me know if anything happens when you press the button.

Thanks all

First off, welcome aboard.

We in the States might not be of help here. The 2012 model had some technology package/option differences across all countries, and Canada has some unique wrinkles of its own.

I might offer that if you are using an older iPhone and/or one that has not had it's firmware updated recently, the issue may be the phone and not the car.

Let us know what you find out.

I have never even tried it to be honest. My last 4 cars have had some degree of voice command capabilities, but I just never tried it with any of them.

I use it for calling up music from the internal hard disk. I don't know if the newer cars support this for an attached iPod. My 2010 535 doesn't. It's convenient.

I also use it for little minor stuff like turning off the navigation when I reach familiar areas.

In general, I try not to interact with all the "fancy" stuff too much while in motion.

Yeah I do expect there to be differences between US and Canadian models. Hopefully there is a fellow Canadian with a similar model than can jump onto this thread to let me know if their voice button does anything. I have a iPhone 5, iPhone 4, BB, and Galaxy S3 in the family and doesn't make a diff to my 335.
