Had the tires put on this morning and my initial impressions are that for my money they are making a big difference in the quality of the ride and my enjoyment of the car. I spend a fair amount of time researching which tire I was going to go with and ended up with the Michelin Primacy MXV4. I had driven Michelin for years and felt I would stick with them as I never had and complaints.

The tire shop spent time in both taking off the OEM tires and putting on the new and gave me tire bags to transport the OEM tires to the E-Bay store so I can sell them.

Here is what I know after making the rounds today:

1. They do not take the bumps hard like the OEM tires. With the stock tires on I always dreaded the bumps and minor pot holes as not only where they jarring you could easily loose the tire as well. My new tires are about what I expected them to be. Perhaps better as I thought the 17" rims and the suspension was also contributing to the hard hitting bumps. I can say the OEM tires are the majority of it - 75% - 80% of it.

2. Over all I feel they are quieter.

3. I do not feel that cornering perfomance has been sacrifaced to any great extent. I tried to push it a little bit today and in fact I would say I feel more confident with these tires than I did the OEM's. The stock tires always felt like they could break free at any time during more argessive driving.

4. Have not experience the tramlining effect I noticed often with the OEM's.

5. No wet weather miles yet - should know more soon with wet weather driving.

So I am happy with my choice to change the tires. I understand some love the OEM's tires or RFT's in general. My post is not to start a flame war with them but to give feedback to those who feel they might like to change to a non-RFT of whatever brand they feel comfortable with.

There are downsides - no spare, no jack - we have to account for this one way or another. Around town I am not to worried. BMW Assist and a flat bed tow truck can get me to the tire shop to at least have the possibility of patching the tire and being on my way and still have tires with matching tread wear.

Just my two cents.

If I'm not mistaking, if you use BMW Assist, they will tow you ONLY to a BMW dealer, and they will not be helping you out with non-rft tires... I've heard horror stories of those that used BMW Assist and then the dealer would only replace tires with RFT's and ended up costing a lot of money. Correct me if I'm wrong... BMW Assist is not exactly a free tow.

I think they will tow you anywhere within 50 miles. Not sure it has to be a BMW dealer.:dunno:

Are the MXV4s an all-weather tire? I'm assuming you don't have the Sports Package, because you have the 17" wheels. I've looked at the Michelin PS2s for my 18" wheels (w/the Sports Package), or if I upgrade to 19" wheels. I don't know if the MXVs would be ideal with the sports package and suspension. I'll admit to little to no knowledge about your MXV4s. I had MXVs on my Honda Accord for years, with good results. However, that was obviously a much different car.

It may seem redundant, but I keep my AAA Plus Auto Club membership for times like this. I get a free tow to any place within 100 miles.

I switched to non-RFT a year ago after 1000km I love Non-RFT

But I am switching back to RFT for 1 simple reason : my wife starts to work late at night and it starts to worry me about puncture and safety

So I have to sacrifice better ride for safety

If you have the stock base suspension and the stock 16" wheels, the Continental RFTs are great--great wear mileage, ride and decent handling. Most people with sport suspension cars seem to be very happy with Michelin PS2s. I just put Yokohama Advan ultra HP all seasons on my A3 after two sets of Conti Contac 2 summer tires and am very pleased. The Yokos ride much better, are quieter and seem to handle nearly as good. They are the #2 ultra HP AS tire on Tire Rack.

no clue why bmw did not include a tool.
having a jack in the trunk will improve weight distribution
Yes, but it would cost more. We are in an age of minimising costs, especially for automakers.

Damn I can't wait to wear out the RFTs on our 325i. The whirring from 50-100km/h is insane. It drowns out most conversations. When I get home on Weds, I am going to turn DSC off and go thru some corners. And perhaps I'll stop braking for the off-ramps too.

I'm considering the same tire to replace the RFT's when my car comes in. Do you know what the #1 UHP AS tire was?

As Claud 3 said "If you have the stock base suspension and the stock 16" wheels, the Continental RFTs are great--great wear mileage, ride and decent handling." That's the setup we have on ours. We have 28K on them now and just began cupping at 26K. Due to the Continental RFT tire shortage until June (according to America's Tire), I ordered an extra tire to keep in the car; it was backordered 2 weeks. The wife is getting used to having the spare in the back (in a tire tote). Yesterday, we went to Bimmerfest in Santa Barbara. She had no idea the multitude of aftermarket rims. Softening her up for that upgrade of tires and rims!

I switched to non-RFT a year ago after 1000km I love Non-RFT

But I am switching back to RFT for 1 simple reason : my wife starts to work late at night and it starts to worry me about puncture and safety

So I have to sacrifice better ride for safety
Safety. Isn't that the reason they were there in the first place? :dunno:

I was told by a tire shop that the temp spare of the X3 might fit this car? Can anyone corroborate? I was told it fits the 3-series so if the wheels in this car are the same as in the 3 series then it would work.

saw an e90 with space saver wheel on this morning... was told by local BM that X3 space saver rim can fit E90 but you may have to chnage to slightly smaller tire

I have the Sport Package on my car so the front wheels and tires are a different size than the rear tires. When you switch to non-RFT's, do you replace them with the same sizes that originally came on the car (front tires being a different size than the rear tires)?
