I thought it was much improved from last year. They cut out on the dumb 90210 guy! The interviews were more serious than last year, but not nearly as technical as that of Speed Channel. The announcer was very excited and passionate. Do you remember him yelling at the start of the race?
I did not care for the way they cut and packaged the event. I actually enjoy seeing the warm-up laps before the start, this for the most part was not seen. They did not show the warm-up laps, the cars pulling around last curve to take their spot on the grind, or the mechanics hovering around the grided cars. So the start of the race caught me off guard, I was thinking… what are they doing? They cannot be starting now!
I also thought that they cut out much of the FIA interview after the race. If I remember correctly, the only showed us 1 question for each to the podium drivers?
All in all I think it was an entertaining broadcast, but I am going to still watch the Speed Channel re-broadcast this weekend.
After about 15 minutes of it, i couldn't watch it anymore. It just wasn't the same as Speed Channel, who is soooo much better. At least now i'll get to watch F1 races for the next two weekends.
I'm glad they used someone else's coverage, or at least someone else's (I think SKY) commentators (I don't recall their names). Yeah, all the RedBull stuff was lame but its a big program to find an American F1 driver, which I think the series could use if it wants to have more appeal in the US (OK, don't get me started about the lack of American drivers in CART...)
I thought it was fantastic. Bernie's digital feed was great. It was also great to have Ben Edwards and John Watson do the commentary, although I do like David Hobbs and Steve Matchett. Where does ABC continue to come up with these idiots like Danny Sullivan. He has no ability to be a TV personality. I wish they would offer the digital feed here. I think it would be about 20 to 30 dollars a race. I won't have to worry about it for Montreal...I'm going. Can't wait. My only suggestion would be to drop that infomercial and cover the warm up to the race. It helps to build tension.
It was totally lame in comparison with Speed IMO. The commentary you get with Speed's team of announcer's is superior in about every aspect. ABC needs to keep it simple and dumb it down for the mass audience I guess.
The whole 30-45 minutes wasted on the we need an American driver Red Bull**** piece had me channel surfing until the race started. What a waste of airtime.:tsk:
I thought the coverage was okay, echoing pretty much what CD-55 said already.
At least the commentator's knew the driver and team names unlike the morons at the US GP last year.
I liked Bernie's tongue in cheek poke at American's, when talking about them racing in F1 : "We have a lot of McDonald's in Europe now, so that shouldn't be a problem..." :lmao:
What I thought was nice about the coverage was the better, and more varied camera angles. Since Speed Channel gets the world feed they are limited by how good or bad the local director is. How many times have we watched Michael running by himself lap after lap and missed good battles farther back. That shot they had pointing back toward the mouth of the tunnel when Sato crashed, I've never seen before.
I enjoyed the coverage and was happy that it was better than last year! For those of us without Speed Channel, it was great to actually see a race vs. reading about it!
