I got this idea from another thread where you guys (sorry ladies) were talking about parking miles from civilization to avoid the possibility of door dings and the such. So here are two questions:

1) Have you ever got a ding (or scratch) and retailated? how?

2) What would you do if you saw a ding and KNEW it was the car parked next to you?

I will start...

1) Yes, a white Acura once dinged my Prelude: I keyed it and left a note explaining why....

2) I have an ice-pick which fits perfectly in the truck-lid-tool box and I WILL push it thru TWO of the (tire) sidewalls should it ever happen again.... (two tires, because most people ONLy carry one spare)

BONUS QUESTION: Am I wrong to think this way????

I for one am extremely selective with where I park. My friends know it's just 'me' and expect to park far away or go end-spot hunting for as long as it's necessary if we take my car. But the possibility always exists that something could happen... and you have to be prepaired for this (apparently you are - in your own little way).

I hold the opinion that once a car has been dinged, scratched, or involved in an accident it is never the same. It kills me to see this happen. However, I don't think revenge is the answer. 'Keying' someone's car or puncturing their tires is both childish and foolish. Moral implications aside, what if they took your license plate number down and were looking to contact you or looking for something to write on? Or what if someone else witnessed you taking your revenge? And do you really think that by doing this you are changing them and all the other 'door dingers' in the world? I wish you could, but the sad truth is that you aren't.

What they did was probably an accident, and chances are that they were unaware that they even did it (often times it is a child swinging the back door of a sedan all the way open). What you did and are planning to do is malicious, premeditated, and obviously intentional. The law would not be on your side.

The best thing to do IMHO is to take down their license plate number, take pictures (you DO have a camera in your car, don't you?), and confront them in a rational manner when they return. Being irrational will get you nowhere, especially if an officer arrives at the scene or if you end up in court. If you can't wait for them to return, you could leave a note (or two!) on their car stating that they damaged your vehicle and left the scene, and that you have proof/took pictures and you will report what they did as a hit and run if you don't hear from them in x number of hours.

Personally I couldn't sleep at night knowing that I damaged someone elses personal property on purpose - regardless of what they did to mine. Doing that is wrong no matter what the situation. As the saying goes, "Two wrongs don't make a right."

And to answer your question of whether or not you're wrong to think the way you do... I think many of us probably think the way you're thinking, but lucky for everyone else we don't actually act on it.

You might consider picking up some books on anger management. They might come in handy in situations like these! :thumb:

How to prevent Keyings?

My friends car recently got keyed, it was a SLK230 and I would hate to see the same happen to my new 325I, so far these are the things I can think of to prevent keyings...

1.) Park further away in lots, but don't park unnecessarily far when the lot is empty since that will only attract attention.

2.) Do not get personalized plates

3.) Park in safe locations & neighborhoods

Can anyone think of anymore....

Thanks

Obvious ones

Try for an end spot

Dont take up two spots

Dont do the diagonal park job

Park next to cars that look like they are taken care of

Stay away from cars with baby seats in the back and cars that appear to belong to the elderly (buick+handicap sticker)

Think no, act yes. There is nothing one can do to totally avoid dings other than not to park in parking lots. I have the attitude that most people are a-holes and will ding your car and won't care. Defensive parking is required. Avoid coupes with long doors, minivans, conversion vans, and any car with bumper stickers. A quickrule of thumb is that if I can open my door fully without hitting them they shouldn't be able to hit me after taking into account the size of their door. You also have to be stealthily placed in the lot and not stand out as suggested previously. I take it as a game to see if I can outsmart the a-holes and make it fun. A-holes piss poor attitudes shouldn't have to make yours poor too.

BTW, at work I find it kind of humorous that all the high dollar sports cars park around me. I guess it's the old adage that there is safety in numbers. :lmao:

Same situation at my office... There my 325i, a VW GTI 337 Special Edition, a Saab 9-5 wagon that seem to park close to each other every day. :thumb:

Never retaliated, but I could see myself doing it.

I'd probably spit on the car and leave a nasty note. Nothing damaging and it gets the point across. I like spitting on things... :D

I agree with this except the part about minivans. Minivans have sliding rear doors which are the ones kids use so they can't damage your car . . .

I've taken to spitting on cars that drive through a crosswalk when I (as pedestrian) have the right of way. It seems to make a particularly strong impression on those who notice...which unfortunately is < 10%.

Yeah, it's a shame how inattentive some people are. I can't wait for the day when I spit into someone's open driver-side window. With my luck, though, it'd probably cause an accident.

It's just a freakin car. Your going to drive it for a few years, and then get another one. Stuff might happen to it while you own it, or maybe it won't.

Get over it

You don't really expect us to believe you that you keyed a car, and then was stupid enough to leave a note:confused:

For a long time I've been thinking of getting a set of bumper stickers made up that say something like "thanks for being a buttwadd".

Of course, I wouldn't put it on their bumper... instead on their windshield... smack in the middle. As they spend an hour peeling off the sucker, they can contemplate their actions.

Of course even "Have a nice day :)" would work fine.

The city of Boston does this sometimes for people who park illegally - instead of ticketing/towing, they put this huge, ugly, bright orange sticker on their (side) window that tells them what they did wrong. It takes quite an effort to get it off.

Honestly, I think that's more effective than a $15 ticket.

Sticker is easier to get of than "the boot":)

The long front doors on minivans, not the sliding ones. The overweight divorced soccer moms are the culprits. :D

This is my outlook as well . . . Retaliation is the attitude of a person who is insecure . . .

Why can't you just be happy to be alive and healthy . . .

I wish some of the fools/idiots I pass and see on the road would realize that too Alan. Also the ones that want to go 100 plus everywhere, to get them no where at all quickly, going in and out of cars. Funny thing is, if you drive normal, you still end up behind them or even pass them up the road after they have put the car and others in risk.... sometimes I dont get it...:dunno:
