What? So the ecm knows when the hood is open?.so,if im sitting in car with engine on and someone opens bonnet then the dash light "flashes"?

No...its part of the DWA system (anti-theft alarm siren system). If the car is (double locked)...and someone tried to pry open the hood, the alarm would go off.

Or, as many e39 owners have found out, when the sensor breaks off or becomes unseated, or doesn't sit correctly on the microfilter housing from the years of extreme heat...the alarm goes off at the most embarrassing times of day.

most of use have disconnected it,

wait till it goes off on you in the middle of the night or in the middle of a meeting
