My 02 530i is a an engineering marvel & as of right now (actually going on 7 months) pain in the ass sometimes I wanna take her to the range & empty 5000 rounds in her. But I keep on trying to correct the problem. But I'm seriously hoping someone out there can help me get my baby back on the road again.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED!!
After putting on some new front/back brakes like I've done countless times before. So I'm done with the brake job, lower the Jack clean up & get ready to take her out for a test run (like I always do) I pull out my garage into the street ease on the brakes put her in D & go around the block for some acceleration and quick braking test. No problems what so ever nice clean quite powerful braking actions (like always). I come to the end of the street felling very pleased with her performance braking etc. Sitting there with a smile I decided to put her in Reverse and have some fun instead of just turning around. I'm at a full stop shift her to R & I hit the gas (biggest mistake ever) she accelerates beautifully I go about 300ft give or take I hit the brakes & instantly I feel & hear a loud bang/hit kinda like when metal gears slam or jams or separates from another or into another. She stopped but I just **** her up. So I put her in D & slowly drive back to the garage. With the Trans-Failsafe & service lite now on . She drives but I get no reverse. I figured I killed my transmission. After I take out my transmission (ZF5HP19) & begin to disassemble it I discovered I cracked the "D" drum. So I buy new parts reassembled her put the transmission back in the car ...No Reverse....I buy an advanced code reader (Performance Shift Solenoid "A" stuck ). I've rebuilt two valve body's go on my third with three sets of refurbished solenoids and still no ****en Reverse......WHAT THE ****!!

Can anyone help me with suggestions or better yet tell me what I'm not doing right....

Im no expert but Id say you messed up by not being a qualified transmission mechanic.

You open the trans, rebuild everything- not just the obviously broken parts and the parts that have codes....

Then again, shooting it might be a better plan.

Oh, having a potty mouth makes you sound dumb. F this or F that here and there can be used to good effect, but searing in the title and 8 more times is just...unnecessary.

Also, the transmission will cost more than market value of your 2002 530i. You might as well donate the car for tax write-off assuming you are capable of doing itemize deduction on your 1040.

Hi,

I can understand your frustration!

1. Better to name the topic of the thread - Rebuilt Auto gearbox not working or something to that effect and,
2. Ditch the auto completely and convert to manual. That's what I've just done on my 530d!

If that's not possible, I'm sure some other guys with more mechanical/technical experience can come along and give suggestions. Failing that, have the auto gearbox overhauled at a reputable specialist.

You need to post in the E39 forum and/or the E46 forum. Losing reverse is a common and well documented problem with this transmission. It's very common in E46s, so you'll find more info in that forum. I'm pretty sure there's a diy fix and maybe even a kit. However, I don't know if these will address your problem being that you've already done significant work without good results.

You may need a new torque converter. Am not a expert on transmission but when I loss the reverse and transmission slipping. For some time
And also changed all the shift solenoid with out a fix.
not until I put in a new torque converter my problem was fix.
Please note I drive a 97 528 with a GM transmission so it may or may not work.
But it's a cheep fix of you DIY.

Being that you are capable enough to replace the D drum, I would recommend tearing it down again. It has got to be something you overlooked. I'm not a trans pro, in fact, I know almost zero about them. I'm envious of your fearlessness when it comes to tearing down a trans. With the other options shooting it or scrapping it, what have you got to lose? After all that work that is the last thing you want to do. But in the end it's worth it or you wouldn't be posting here. I wish I could offer more than encouragement. And remember to post any resolution. From one potty mouth to another GOOD LUCK:thumbup:

Thx buddy all we can do is try.....FYI I must have took the transmission apart to the bare core 6 + times only because I wanted to familiarize (practice) it was the most badass complex thing I've ever done it was a very fun but time consuming tear down and rebuild being that I have no formal knowledge other than (believe it or not) YouTube....I **** you not I must have watched countless hrs any thing related but in all fairness it did help. I hate to think that all the notes I recorded not to mention hundreds of pic & video of every piece before and after, that I missed something.......Thx again for the positive feedback I most definitely will post an update (might be awhile lol) Thx again every body....GET UR DONE!!

There is a thread on another forum that I've seen dealing with an automatic tranny in an E39 (the ZHP24 I believe). IIRC it sounded something like what you're going through. You might want to take a gander there and see if it helps with your problem - something with the case being the issue (??).
