I want to share a learning experience. I just replaced the fan clutch (Lufterkupplung) on my 3.0L engine.
A whine developed in my engine. It was not audible below about 2500 rpm from the driver's seat. It would get louder with engine speed and change pitch with engine speed. At first I thought it might be an idler pulley. Using a screwdriver for a listening device, I ruled out alternator and power steering pump. Then I found I could hold the fan at engine idle and it offered no resistance. I removed the fan and started the engine- noise was gone.
Changing the fan clutch is pretty easy- took about 25 minutes. The fan clutch has a big nut with left handed threads (Turn clockwise to loosen). The fan shroud must be removed while lifting out the fan. Bolt the new clutch to the fan and drop both the fan and shroud back in. Tighten and go.
