So I have 5 spare M68 wheels 2 of which are 8.5 inches wide. I expect my new 2003 330i will arrive also with M68s. I am wondering If I could run the 8.5 inch wheels all around. I know that some 8.5 inch wheels fit up front.

Surely someone has tried the 8.5 M68s up front! What were the results? What size tire will fit up there on them? I had 235/40-17 on my SSRs that were 8.0 inches.

What is the offset on the 17x8.5? I can't say that I've tried it but I've looked at enough wheel/tire size combos to make a good guess. :D

No, I will have 5 that are 7.5" extra in the garage with a 6th as spare in my trunk.

Garage Status 9/20/2002:

3 M68's 7.5-17
2 M68's 8.5-17
4 ATA winter's for E46/E36 7.0-16
4 ? racing 7.5-15 for E30

uhh I don't know just that standard M68 that comes with 328/330 with Sport Package option.

I figuressomeone has swaped them, maybe if only on accident? Now that I am going to have 2 sets maybe 8.5's would work all around?

Well, the offsets are cast onto the wheels somewhere, usually somewhere on the back, around the lip or the center.

I don't suppose I need to mention that 235/40/17 are 0.6in smaller than stock, which for track use might actually be an advantage. :D

Anyhow, what I can say is that 235/40/17 on a 17x8.5 should fit fine with little or no rubbing, depending on the squareness of the tire, up front if the wheel's offset is between 40 and 45mm.

Yes

It definitely will. For autocrossing, I use 8.5", Type 68 wheels with 245/45 Kuhmo Victoracers all around. No rubbing problems. That setup combined with full stiff on the Dinan sways and the car handles really good. The car turns alot better and I don't understeer as much as I used to...for autox that is. On the streets I have 18" wheels - 8" in the front and 9" in the rear.
