Rost, it's had a 6 sp since at least '97, maybe even longer (i think since 95, but I can't remember)

I didn't realize the 540 was a 6 speed though . . . it must have been one fo the first 6 speeds availabe !!!

They are very fast Only problem I've noticed when I've driven my friends is that I rarely got to use 6th:angel:

My dad has owned two 540i-6's - the first a 1999, now a 2002. Very fast cars, and the 2002 has even more torque and horsepower (290 hp. now).
The 6th gear is a 'real' gear. Unlike a Corvette, which needs 5th gear to pull top speed and 6th is only an overdrive, the 540i-6 needs to be shifted at 140+ into 6th for the top speed (rumored to be 165 without the limiter).
I've done 153 mph in my dad's 1999 model.

It is not a 'base' 540i without the Steptronic option (that car does not exist). It comes with the M-technic steering wheel, wheels, stick shift knob, etc... standard.
In prior years, it had blacked-out window trim too.... Rear tires are 255-17's and fronts are 235-17's. It does 0-60 in <5.5 seconds!
