I came by to visit you on the 26th. Why isn't my name up there? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: And I didn't see any of those other folks there (though I wouldn't recognize Razz or Ausgang).

I've seen his posts. Just didn't realize that was a self portrait.

LOL. I know the answer... (said in a polly-annish, bratty voice)

And Jon, if I ever get out that way, I'll have to drop in as well.

You know, I was going to make a post thanking you for stopping
by first, but then that would have blown the set-up for this...

Operknockcity came by and hung out with me yesterday;
we had a nice chat about the boards and BMWs.
He's also part of that really lucky group heading up
to Death Valley this weekend! Wish I could go...
Damn!!! :(

I really do appreciate your taking the time to come by
operknockcity; I really hope that you you don't feel
slighted by my omission - not mentioning your visit sooner...

Later on in the day another visitor stepped into my
office. I've exchanged family photos with this person
many times over the past 3-4 years, but was
caught completely off guard... For a second I didn't
know who it was... He didn't even get his name out
when I detected that New York accent. It was 'Ausgang'
indeed! For those of you who have been frequenting
the boards for a long time, you already know that
David is an Engineer who has been working on analyzing
the remnants of The World Trade Center since last
year.

Last year, on September 11th, my most vivid memory
is reading a post from him (on .org) that a plane had
just flown overhead, and then we didn't hear from him
for days. We knew that he lived practically next door
to the WTC...

Well, that job is finally done, and he brought with him
some incredible images that he had captured on his
camera over the past year. He also brought with him
a most unususal item/gift for yours truly - a very large
bolt that had been sheered off during the collapse.
Man, I tell you it is/was really strange. When you pick
this thing up, you can actually feel a sort of energy charge
emanating from deep down inside of it...

Anyway, David (Ausgang) is in Santa Barbara until
tomorrow; hopefully, we'll be getting together
after work this evening. You know, sometimes
people think that the relationships that are formed
here on the Internet are not real, and that these
message board forums/discussion groups (chat rooms?)
are a bunch of crap. I completely disagree...
I have made so many real friends over the years,
and I appreciate all of them...

Not much different than someone you talk to exclusively on the phone and then meet at a later date. As long as the interaction is honest, a friendship can be formed.

I have had the privledge of meeting David on a few occasions as well when he was down in the area working on the WTC analysis at NIST. We've had dinner and a few beers a couple of times. And I want to second your sentiment, Jon, as to how you really can meet and become friends with some great people through these boards. David is one of them.

Why gee, thanks Tom! I feel the same about you.

LOL. :lmao:

You know, you just HAD to go and ruin a sincere moment, didn't you.

As we all know, you're the poster boy for the kind of internet-based real-life meetings that people are afraid of. I'm somewhat amused that you realize that.

No problem! After I left Cutter I hung out in downtown SB for a while (There is a really nice exhibit at the Art Muesum called Ruth Harriet Louise and Hollywood Glamour Photography). Then drove back to LA and met some friends for dinner. So by the time I got home and hit the boards, I was tired and still a bit alcohol fueled, and then couldn't stop laughing about the BRT and INHI thang. Besides, I like a good setup

I think you deserve to have some fun since they are giving you headaches about the SULEV vs stick 3er allocations!

Not at all. What with the allocation problems and all, I'm surprised you had enough energy left to remember the other events of the day and post at all last night.

And as important as I am to the survival of the human race (NOT) and the perpetuation of peace in the world (NOT), etc. etc., a visit from Ausgang would be much more memorable given that he is a friend of many years vs having just met me. (Good thing I'm modest :D )

Now about that avatar... :lmao:
