Yes, there was a coaxial cable connect to the factory amp. Keep in mind, it did work fine last night, just not this morning.
That would confirm Digital DSP, Double check your power leads going to the converter to make sure they are making contact.

Dice Silverline latest-generation iPod touch charging and keep alive method?

Hi Tom,

As you know, I installed the radio interface "Dice Silverline" in my 2002 BMW 525i and wrote up installation instructions (for a USA 2002 E39 BMW 525i, Business CD radio, no CD changer, no DSP, no satellite, no navigation, no bluetooth installed). The radio mount turned out to be simple, once you knew the tricks.

The sound from the Dice Silverline is great, and, now that I know to hit the radio buttons (6)(4), then use the large arrow on the steering wheel to scroll to the desired song within the album, then pressing the radio button (1), I can now select an album and then play the desired songs within that album.

I have two questions at this point for the new model Dice Silverline.

QUESTION 1:
The Dice Silverline I have is "supposed" to charge the latest generation iPod touch when the E39 engine is running ... but I never see the iPod touch charging icon go on when connected to the Dice Silverline (the tiny lightning bolt in the top right of the iPod touch inside the tiny battery symbol). I do see the charging indicator go on when I connect to the PC USB port.

Q1: How do I know if the Dice Silverline is actually charging my latest generation iPod touch?

QUESTION 2:
The iPod touch keeps going to sleep; where is a pointer to the specific steps to keep it awake so that I don't have to manually wake it up every morning? I did google for "dice calendar keep alive ipod touch" and a few others but did not find the steps. Also, I did search the apple web site with the same keywords. Can someone point me to a URL which shows how often to set calendar events (or is it reminders?) to keep the ipod alive when used with the Dice Silverline radio integration?

Q2: How do we set up the timer or calendar so the iPod touch won't go to sleep? (i.e., what are the steps, what time interval, what program - calendar or sleep timer, etc.)

The iPod Touch can't be reliably kept awake with calendar reminders, it can go to 'sleep' very quickly (less than 5 mins). If you want to try you'll need to set alarms that wake it up just before the time you normally want to use the car. Repeating reminders are no good either, it will only fire the alarm once, then wait for it to be acknowlaged before fireing it again, you'll need to have an individual alarm for, say, every day of the month then clear them down at least once a month. There's maybe another restriction with iPod Touch alarms, I 'think' they will only stack up 4 triggered alarms, after that new alarms do not go off untill you acknowlage them.

Bottom line, I don;t think you'll get calendar reminders to keep an iPod touch awake, but it's worth a go.

Dice Silverline iPod touch sleep mode & charging issues

I don;t think you'll get calendar reminders to keep an iPod touch awake, but it's worth a go.
Ah. Maybe that's why I'm having so much trouble keeping the iPod touch awake! First I tried calendar reminders, then alarms, then the stopwatch, then the automatic email fetch, etc.

Then I tried looking it up as Tom had suggested but, for the life of me, I couldn't find (I was surprised) how to keep the iPod touch awake via the calendar.

Interestingly, I'm not even sure what we mean by going to sleep. For example, if I start the stopwatch on the late-generation iPod touch in an attempt to keep the iPod touch awake, it counts but still, it "goes off".

At what point is the iPod touch "asleep" such that it needs to be awoken?

First, the iPod touch is "running" brightly and an application is going (e.g., safari). Then, the backlight or whatever dims greatly (application still running but can dimly be seen). Finally, the screen goes pitch black. If I press the one button I'll see the world from space and the command "Slide to unlock". After I push the slide, the application shows back up brightly (e.g., safari).

I just set all the settings to the following:
1. Settings->General->Autolock->Never
2. Settings->Brightness->Auto-Brightness->ON
3. Settings->Fetch New Data->Push->ON->Every 15 Minutes

When exactly is it that the deadly "sleep" mode" occurs?

PS: And, what's with that icon never showing charging when attached to the DICE Silverline? Did I get shipped the wrong Silverline? How can I tell?

Can you PM me your full name so I can see what version SILVERLINE you have?

I might have a bad cable ... will troubleshoot ...

Can you PM me your full name so I can see what version SILVERLINE you have?
I spoke to Tom by phone. He's fantastic. I'm glad I bought from him per Bimmerfest recommendations ...

It turns out I do have the correct "blue connector" DICE Silverline cable to charge the new second-generation iPod touch (aka itouch) so we're gonna troubleshoot a bit by swapping in other borrowed iPods to see if the Dice Silverline charges them or not. If not, we'll swap cables.

As for the use model, Tom tells me I did not need to go to (6)(4)(>)(1)(>) to scroll thru songs within any particular album. Tom tells me all I need to do is (4)(>)(1)(>)which translates to the quick tutorial below (I'm gonna print this and keep it in my glove box for my passengers).

My desired use model (> indicates either the steering wheel or radio arrows, which can go either way).
(6)(4) (>) (1) (>) Scroll thru each song within a selected album
(6)(3) (>) (1) (>) Scroll thru each song within a selected artist
(6)(2) (>) (1) (>) Scroll thru each song within a selected playlist
(6)(1) (>) (1) (>) Scroll thru each song on your iPod touch

Basically, for navigation purposes, Tom suggested I stay away from the MID (5) & (6) buttons.
(5)(>-01) (1) Sets the source to iPod instead of Aux
(5)(>-02) (1) Sets the source to Aux instead of iPod

And the (6) button is apparently only used for changing the text mode so that only gets pressed the first time I set it up
(6)(>-03) (1) sets the song display to the instrument cluster
(6)(>-04) (1) sets the song display to the MID

Tom also helpfully explained the reason I was getting the second-character question mark (e.g., P?laylist vs Playlist) on my cluster display was probably because I was connecting the iPod touch to the DICE Silverline while the iPod touch was in deep sleep (which occurs after about 8 hours or so).

Tom suggested we never connect the iPod touch to the DICE Silverline without waking it up (even if it's only in the light sleep which occurs in a few minutes).

Tom, my Dice Silverline purchased on 6/16/08 was working just fine with my 30 GB 5 gen iPod video. I just got a new 2nd gen iPod touch and it won't charge the iPod. I get the message on the iPod that this accessory will not charge this iPod (as shown in the pics on previous posts). Is there anything that I can do to get my new touch to charge. As it is I'm using it in unlocked mode as the performance was intermittent, so the charging feature was the only appeal of the DICE over the oem aux input.
Thanks in advance.

You need the new docking cable due to the USB requirement on your iPod's dock connector:

Printable instructions for using the DICE Silverline in an E39

Here is a printable set of use model instructions for the DICE Silverline

(5)(>-02)(1) Sets the input source to Aux

TEXT DISPLAY (CLUSTER or MID):
(6)(>-03)(1) Displays song information on the Cluster
(6)(>-04)(1) Displays song information on the MID

Note: (#) is a MID button; (>-##) is an sub-arrow selection;
and (>) is just the arrow (either steering wheel or MID).

Note: It's important to disconnect, then power up the iPod;
then reconnect it to the DICE; do this sequence whenever
the iPod has gone into "deep" sleep (a few hours or more).

HELP! Any other DICE instructions to keep in your glovebox?

It's quite simple. The brown tire on the DICE harness is cut towards the 3-pin connector side.

The GLI has 3 wires, a Red, Blue and Black and the module is directional. Red will go towards the BMW connector side with Blue towards the DICE side. Black will go to a good clean ground.
Hi Tom,
On my 3-pin connector side, there is no brown wire. There is a black, yellow and grey wires! Which one should I cut to connect the 12amp noise filter? :cry::cry:

Need I add that I have Sirius!

I recently installed a Dice Silverline Ipod integration unit in my E46 325i 2002 car. I have an issue with the sound that i am not able to solve and i don't know what else try. The fact is that some kind of static noise is listened during reproduction, it sounds like an FM interference and it is really annoying while playing classic or vocal music. It is independent from engine since it does the same no matter engine is on or off. I have also revised the connections several times without success. For the installation i followed your instructions, i cabled from trunk (cd changer port) to right hand glove where i have put the Dice box to have easy access.
Thanks in advance.

iRten,

Recheck your connections to make sure everything is tight/secure.
Tom,

I've been trying to find a solution for this in the thread, but never saw an answer. I am having the same problem. I hear static whenever using the iPod, and have tried reconnecting and checking the connections, everything is fine. What could be causing this?

Unrelated question - I thought that the currently playing song/artist info was supposed to scroll on my console, but it doesn't. Is there a command to get that to happen? Thanks and I apologize if I'm missing these answers already posted somewhere.

What is the button sequence to get the text display to SCROLL?

Good question!

I can move the text display either from the console (i.e., the instrument cluster) or the radio (i.e., the MID) with these commands:
TEXT DISPLAY (CLUSTER or MID):
(6)(>-03)(1) Displays song information on the Cluster
(6)(>-04)(1) Displays song information on the MID

But, I can't for the life of me control whether it is static or if it will scroll!

Some days it scrolls, some days it's static ... I'm sure due to a button or three that I am pressing (or that I'm not pressing).

So, I also ask:
What is the button sequence to get the text display to SCROLL?

Hey that is exactly my problem actually! Although in my case it only scrolls about once a week, the rest of the time it is static. I'm also confused as to what you mean by Cluster and MID? There is only one place in my car that has a display, that's the one line text display on my radio/cd player. I'm guessing there is another spot if you have NAV or something?

What year is your 330? If its an 03, you might want to redo the trouble-shooting with the first DIP switch in the DOWN position. Thar worked for me with the same problems you are reporting here! :dunno:

Ok thanks I'll give that a try, I have an '04. Is this from the troubleshooting on the DICE website? Or the manual?

Hmmm... mine is a 2002 E39 with the business CD but no navigation and no CD changer in the trunk.

With the DICE Silverline acting as the CD Changer, I can choose to display on the instrument cluster or I can choose to display on the radio/cd player.

Here's a picture of the display on the instrument cluster that I posted with my radio-mount DIY

My DICE manual says, for my model year and radio/cd/nav configuration, to have both DIP switches in the "UP" position so I don't think that is the reason for the scroll/noscroll.

I'm sure Tom, when he sees this confusion, can help clarify what it is that makes the song information scroll or not scroll.

Once we get that information, I'll add it to my printable writeup on how to use the DICE Silverline that we can keep in our glove compartments for reference.

My manual also say to have the DIP switches in the UP position. However, I tried several times to get it working in that position without success. Called EAS a couple of times, including a few e-mails all to no avail. At last, one guy at EAS told me to call DICE direct, which I did. When I explained my problems to the Dice rep., he just told me to depress to the DOWN position the first DIP switch and try the TS again. Ever since, my dice ipod has been working flawlessly apart from the static sound I reported earlier... :dunno:
