i'm looking to wire up my QTP electric cutout. it requires a 12V, switched power source. i don't want to use the cigarette lighter/power port as that's constant 12V, and i want the cutout to only be useable when the key is ON or engine running.

what are my options? the switch will be mounted inside the cubbyhole with sliding door, so somewhere close to there is preferable. perhaps the light for the ashtray? or the heated seats? i don't know what color wires will be positive. ground should be easy (somewhere on the body/frame).

2001 540i 6 speed.

I don***8217;t think that***8217;ll work for me, because your link provides power sources overhead in the sunroof area; if I used that, I***8217;d have to run wires between the sunroof and the center console, where the switch will be mounted. No easy way to do that. This is why I need a power source in the console/dash area.

The flashlight port is also a valid area to draw power from with the adapter, but the problem is that the adapter provides another cigarette lighter style receptacle, whereas the QTP cutout wiring is just 2 bare wires, designed to be soldered/crimped into an existing harness. You can***8217;t connect two bare leads to a cigarette receptacle. This is where I***8217;m stuck.

Its pretty easy to go from the sunroof switch panel to the a pillar and down to the center console. The 12v outlet for the flashlight in the glovebox is controlled by ignition. I tapped into that. I have it going to a relay that provides power to my aux fuse block in the center console. I have wanted to add an extra on off switch for the garmin that I have installed in the roof, and have one of the buttons on the steering wheel control it. My car is prewired for the phone, but has no phone, leaving two open steering wheel buttons.

The flashlight outlet in the glove compartment is switched and the adapter shown is available from a dealer for around $10.

The other option is to look for the phone wiring harness inside the console. The purple wire is switched 12v positive and the brown is a ground.
