Hi i just got i an e36 and it is a auto and has some button ( has S,E,M on it ) next to the window buttons. Can some one please tell me what it dose?

I put it is "S" and it seemed to go better, when i put it in "M" and was in "Drive" not in "1,2,3" and it was like it was in 4th gear....

Would i be right in saying that this button is a mode button for the auto gearbox?

Also is there much problems that i should check.... E.G rust spots, oil leaks, parts that fail.....

Sorry if this has been cover before :(

The manual I have explains that the E is economy mode,S is sport mode and holds the gear longer, M is manual mode and if it has the snow flake symbol that is winter mode, you can lock out 1st gear in winter and manual mode.

Weird seeing it on the other side of the shifter. They are transmission controls. You were correct when you put it in "M" it means you have to manually change the gears from 1-2-3-4. If you start in "D" that would be fourth. "S" is for standard. Mine is labeled "A" and "M" with no "E". Not sure what that one is.
Always look for oil leaks, but there is a thread here titled "Buying an E36?" that will answer most of your questions. Just click below! Congrats on the new car and you will love it.
