I took delivery of a very early 2024 X5 xDrive40i on Saturday 4/8/2023. On 4/11 I noticed a check Engine light. I have a scanner, Foxwell N510 Pro so I did a scan. Unfortunately the results were not intuitively obvious, but I sent the report to the dealer and scheduled a service call. I drove the car in late on Thursday 4/13. It finally was looked at late on Monday 4/17. Tuesday morning I was informed I had a switchable rocker arm fault. For those of you that did not know the switchable rocker arm was added to the B58B30M2 engine in the newest X7 and X7. According to the BMW press release, BMW USA News - The New BMW 7 Series: Automotive luxury and innovations for the digital era.. this feature is tied to the hybrid system that was introduced. Here is a quote from the press release: "The VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control on the intake side is now complemented by switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side, allowing gas exchange to be interrupted, if required. In this way, the engine’s frictional torque on the overrun can be reduced by around two thirds. Therefore, when the driver releases the accelerator, a higher proportion of the braking energy can be absorbed by the mild hybrid system’s generator and fed into the 48V battery by means of recuperation."
I an my dealership do not have a lot of information on this issue yet, but I do know that BMW engineering was immediately notified.
I'm not crying wolf yet. This engine has been in the X7 since 2022. This X5 was a dream to drive, quick, smooth and I loved the iDrive 8 system.
Has anyone else come across this issue in either the X5 or the X7?
