2024 Check Engine - switchable rocker arm

I took delivery of a very early 2024 X5 xDrive40i on Saturday 4/8/2023. On 4/11 I noticed a check Engine light. I have a scanner, Foxwell N510 Pro so I did a scan. Unfortunately the results were not intuitively obvious, but I sent the report to the dealer and scheduled a service call. I drove the car in late on Thursday 4/13. It finally was looked at late on Monday 4/17. Tuesday morning I was informed I had a switchable rocker arm fault. For those of you that did not know the switchable rocker arm was added to the B58B30M2 engine in the newest X7 and X7. According to the BMW press release, BMW USA News - The New BMW 7 Series: Automotive luxury and innovations for the digital era.. this feature is tied to the hybrid system that was introduced. Here is a quote from the press release: "The VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control on the intake side is now complemented by switchable rocker arms on the exhaust side, allowing gas exchange to be interrupted, if required. In this way, the engine’s frictional torque on the overrun can be reduced by around two thirds. Therefore, when the driver releases the accelerator, a higher proportion of the braking energy can be absorbed by the mild hybrid system’s generator and fed into the 48V battery by means of recuperation."

I an my dealership do not have a lot of information on this issue yet, but I do know that BMW engineering was immediately notified.

I'm not crying wolf yet. This engine has been in the X7 since 2022. This X5 was a dream to drive, quick, smooth and I loved the iDrive 8 system.

Has anyone else come across this issue in either the X5 or the X7?

Just picked my new X5 xDrive 40i last week. car is beautiful, technology looks wonderful but have the following software issue

car locks with key inside especially with walk away lock enabled but does the same if you put the key in the cup holder and lock with the other key. So my take is walk away lock is at best useless and at worst will leave you stranded with a locked car.

car came back on after opening trunk and didn’t turn off when closing trunk. we left the car in the garage for 10 minutes and the lights stayed on. Can’t wait to have a dead battery because of this, hope BMW can fix this over the next 3 years 😀 s I don’t have to pay for a battery.

car can park its self, we’ll sometimes, but BMW Dynamic Cruse Control doesn’t include distance control in cruse control unless you buy their very expensive driver assistance plus package and honestly BMW has never been know for the most stable software, ask my neighbor who has an X7M that has been towed twice from his driveway for software issues, so I wouldn’t trust a bmw to self drive.

Don’t get me wrong like you said, the car’s performance is amazing the stying and redesign are beautiful compared to my 2016 X5 but my wife doesn’t trust a brand new car to not leave her stranded, can’t say I blame her. Right now new owner experience is disappointing but that’s pretty typical in my experience with redesigned BMWs.

Problem has been resolved. As it turns out my X5 and another were diagnosed with the same problem on the same day. subsequently my dealership has had yet another instance of this problem. When I reported my problem the other vehicle that had the same issue request the only replacement part in the US first, so I had to wait 6 weeks for a new part from Germany. The part is an electronic part that resides in the engine bay and according to my service advisor was not that difficult to install. At least it did not require any dismantling of the engine.

Car is back and running fine. I very likely will get some compensation from BMW for the lengthy delay in repair.

Damn, I just pulled the same fault code on my 2024 BMW X7 xdrive40i,
"switchable rocker arm, exhaust camshaft; Incorrect switching"
Vehicle only has 204 miles on it. Not even 4 days of ownership. Lets see how this plays out.
I have an appointment Thursday June 1st. The dealer has the audacity to mention our diagnostic fee is $250 LOL.

I just took delivery of my 2024 X5 M60i on 7/25/2024. The next day after 25 miles, I notice the check engine warning light was on. I don't know if I was just excited to have my new car and didn't notice the engine warning light was on or if the light came on later in the day. I took the car to the dealership the next day. They even gave me a loaner car while they looked into figuring out what was going on. In my case, the solution was to update the vehicle OS to 8.5 which also included Drive 8.5. Even better, no charge.

Took delivery of my 2024 X5 M sport at the end of May. July 3rd, check engine light came on. Car was in for service July 17th. Discovered broken rocker arm springs in cylinder 1 and 6. BMW installed a new engine. Received vehicle back mid October. While vehicle was at the dealer, BMW USA released a service campaign for “switchable rocker arms.” I guess BMW decided it’s too costly to replace engines at roughly $30k/ea.

What does this site say when you enter your vin?
Mine had a stop sale a few months ago for the cam followers but now that's gone and it now says 0011460700 and my dealer says there is still no action plan yet from BMW. I'm praying it's only a software update. Mine was built May 19th.

I had the Check Engine light again with the switchable rocker arm code. This time the dealership did a software upgrade. No idea what level is the upgrade, but it seems to be running nicely. Only wish I knew what the iDrive level is now.

I got my 2024 X6 delivered to me in June this year. I had the same issue with the engine light and at the time I was told that BMW is working on it and I will hear back. End of November I received a letter asking me to contact the dealership to have this part repaired. Contacted my dealership and had the vehicle in for a 2 to 3 day’s repair. Vehicle is still at the dealership now for over a week and I was told that the parts are on back order so this will eventually take couple of weeks to be repaired. On my X6 I have had other issues such as having the display turning dark with nothing going on such as parking assistance, navigation, radio etc.

I have a 2024 x6 M Sport that I took in last Wednesday to replace the cam shaft cover and rocker arms. As of today, they still have it. I’m not concerned about the length of time of the repair as much as I am for the needed repair in itself. Brand new vehicle with only 5k in miles on it. That concerns me and the reliability of the engine going forward. Thoughts on this?!?

2024 X5 40i, picked up in October 2023. I've been driving it a lot (10k), and had first oil change this month. After I got it back i noticed rough idle coming out of 'auto start'. Took it in, no errors, drove home from shop, and yellow drivetrain malfunction light came on. Drove right back to dealer, was informed two cylinders misfired. Its been about 2 weeks in the shop, and they determined it was the rocker arm issue, but the VIN was not in scope. The course of action was to replace rocker arm, not replace engine. Went back to pick up some sunglasses and saw the engine completely tore open. 4 month old 83k car now feels like a refurbished CPO. Does this seem like a case for a buy-back? Or should I demand a new engine?

Sorry you are having this issue. I would say it is a case for neither of them. Since they are fixing it they won't do a buyback and at this point likely does not meet your state's Lemon Law criteria. You can ask for a new engine but you aren't entitled to one so they will just say no. Once everything is put back together you should be fine. Besides, look where a new engine got you to begin with. ;)

You must not be following, they recently updated the recall and some vehicles that had previously been repaired must be done again due to bad parts being used. You will show up again if you are affected.
