My friend has a 2005 Ford Mustang (the basic kind) and I have a 2002 325i. He keeps on challenging me to a race (in a safe enviorment), is it a good idea to accept? Both our cars have nothing tuned. His 210hp is dominant to my 184hp but i checked that my car is a bit lighter, what do you guys think?

How experienced are you (and your friend) at racing ? How well do you know the limits of your car ? Are you familiar with dynamics such as trailing throttle oversteer ? If it sounds like I`m speaking Portuguese, you`d better forget about racing for the meantime, and enroll in a BMWCCA-sponsored driving class....we see too many guys like you on the eleven o`clock news....

Regards,
Bob

and go to a track, not a desert. Just because it's in a "secluded area" doesn't make it safe. What if both of you were to crash and both of you were knocked out from the crash? Doesn't make any sense.

Go to a track where is is safe and in case of an emergency, there will be people around to help.

0-60 on a V6 2005 mustang is 6.9 and 1/4 mile comes in at 15.3. 0-60 on a 2002 325i is 7.1, with an unknown 1/4 mile time. However, the mustang is limited to a top speed of 113mph and I believe the 325i is limited around 125mph. It would be a close race either way, but I think it would come down to the driver and reaction time. Whoever gets the fastest jump will have the upper hand in the race. Good luck!

Well you can think of it this way. From what I've read a 2000 328Ci will do about the same 0-60 as a Ford Mustang GT of the same year.

Ive owned a 1998 Mustang (V6) and it was extremely sluggish compared to all the import cars I've owned (toyota, honda) especially on take off. The BMW isn't strong on the low-end, but the speedometer flys on my 2000 328 faster than my 89 Toyota GTS (Miss that car).

Using Steptronic Vs Manual mode... Well, from what I noticed the car will drive based on how you hit the petal. In manual mode you can go all the way to red line each gear (not that that would help you any) but in sport mode if you hit the petal the car knows what you want to do and behaves accordingly. Theres like a button feel when you press the accellerator all the way down, usually drives my RPMs to the max :)

I think you would win, although not 100% simply because you have a lower end engine (in that 325).

I think that's "P-E-D-A-L"....sheesh, help a fellow southerner out and spell the easy one's right at least!

As childish as the post is, I've got to know...

So what's the bet? Winner gets... what?

Pink slips? $100? Wife swap? Groin kick? :tsk:

Or... Loser has to...

Wear a chicken suit to work? Wash/wax your car weekly for a year? Shave one eyebrow? Sit on a barstool naked for an hour?

If you're going to do stoopid things, at least make it interesting...

How about we not try on public roads?

The motor in the Mustang is absolute rubbish. It was taken off a tractor, only has 2 valves per cylinder, is made of rocks and volcanic ash, and only has a single camshaft. No wonder: it's 4 litres but only gets 210hp. The M3 makes twice that power with the same size. It also guzzles petrol faster than my X3.

I have driven both cars, and the 'stang V6 is probably going to be quicker off the line. However, it rules in the mid-range of the rev band. There's no top end power at all and the 325i would likely overtake within a few hundred metres. Don't get me started on the handling: the 'stang has a live rear axle derived from a Conestoga wagon.

The Mustang is a terrible car. But it does have a good automatic gearbox. And it is exciting (moreso than an E90) and has a *cool* factor many cars just don't have.

Just FYI: C/D tested a 325i sport back in 2004 I think. They clocked it at 6,8s from 0-60mph.

Eat a light meal before the race, also ditch your spare tire and anything else in the car that might add weight.

You forgot to mention, what are the transmissions of the cars? Stick or auto?

Havent raced a mustang with my bmw but I did not long ago with my 8500lb crew cab diesel truck. I beat him by 4 car lengths. Was funny as hell at the next redlight. Another car of kids (16 to maybe 18 year olds) that we had passed were all hanging out the windows as they came up to the light too laughing and making fun of the guy in the mustang. He got so mad he ran the redlight and took off.

People 'freak out'......because they are mature. Mature people have been around and think more rational. Personally, if someone wants to race someone, go ahead..just leave it off the streets.

case in point:
I saw 2 kids (17 years old) that decided to race on what they assumed would be a secluded stretch of road..... honda and a mustang...... they were side by side 1/2 mile down the road and a corner was coming up.....neither budged........ car coming other direction didn't see them till it was too late and tried to pull off the road..... the honda driver T boned the oncoming car right on the rear drivers door, KILLING the passenger.....

If that was YOUR grandma in that passenger seat, you'd be offended by the "give me a break" ......
