I need your advice:

I was on my way home from work the other day, cruising along on the interstate. Suddenly the car lost power, big time. I left it in gear in the hope that it would catch again, but it didn't. I came to a stop on the side of I-94 expecting the motor to shut off, but it didn't. It kept idling. I shut it off and popped the hood to look for any obvious malfunctions. Nothing. I started it up and nursed it to the next exit, which had a gas station. The gauge was getting close to E, but I knew I still had 5 gallons or so in there. I filled it up, but that made no difference.

So I nursed it home. My first thought was that the main fuel pump had gone out, or the filter was plugged. There was gunk in the gas tank from old gas that had sat too long and the system is still working that out.

I checked the primary pump and that was working, or at least making noise like it is working. Then I replaced the fuel filter. No change in the problem. It will start, but won't rev up. It seemed like low fuel pressure so I grabbed the return line from the fuel rail with a pliers and gave it a good squeeze. The engine smoothed out and revved up. This made me think it was a bad pressure regulator so I put a new one on. That didn't make a difference either. I still need to constrict the return line to get the engine to run properly.

So, my friends: Any comments/advice/solutions???

trace your return fuel line. it might be cracked to where it cant hold pressure. but for the mean time let the gas burn down, or drain it to a a quarter tank. grab some sea foam and run 1/3 can in gas, 1/3 in crankcase, and the rest in a vacuum line. run the engine for 10-15 minutes. then youll have to change the oil, but itll at least clean the fuel system a bit.

but dont rule out the pump yet. im not 80% positive, but you might also have a 2nd pump thats in tank.

I do have a secondary pump in the tank. I replaced this when I bought the car. I might have to take the back seat out again and check that one out to make sure it is still working. The Sea Foam idea isn't a bad one.
