Battery coding

When I bought my e60 from the BMW dealer they had installed a battery manufactured by East Penn Corp. It was:

92 ah
850 cold cranking amps
170 reserve amps

Costco is having a sale on batteries manufactured by InterState. They are:

95 ah
900 cold cranking amps
160 reserve amps

Now for the question.

When I use INPA or ISTA to code the battery from 92 ah to the new battery which is 95 ah, will I also have to tell INPA or ISTA the 900 cold cranking amps and 160 reserve amps or is the ECU just interested in the amp hours?

There are only a few choices and you can't use any number.

I surfed and found this table that someone said was in on of the BMW tools:
80ah - 80 ampere-hours
90ah - 90 ampere-hours
110ah - 110 ampere-hours
70ah - 70 ampere-hours
55ah - 55 ampere-hours
46ah - 46 ampere-hours
70ah_agm - 70 ampere-hours (agm)
90ah_agm - 90 ampere-hours (agm)
60ah_agm - 60 ampere-hours (agm)
80ah_agm - 80 ampere-hours (agm)

If the current one is 92Ah, then the new 95Ah battery is close enough to the current setting if it is already 90Ah. Make sure the battery chemisty is right.

Nice find.

The table tells a good story about actual BMW battery coding.

My current battery is 92ah and its an AGM. The new battery is 95ah and its an AGM.

Its interesting the table only shows a setting for 90ah_agm and nothing higher (e.g. 95ah)

So there is no coding to do (only registering).

Mystery solved. Thanks.

Here's another question.

How fast do you have to register a new battery?

Optimally, you would do it immediately. However...

If I install the new battery in the Costco parking lot (and give them the old battery), I'll have to drive home about 6 miles before I register it.

Will that hurt the new battery?

A battery need only be registered from best service life. Choose the nearest LOWER capacity to prevent overcharge.

one ampere-hour of overcharge electrolyzes 0.335 grams, 400 cubic centimeters of electrolyte water to oxygen and hydrogen gas that is vented and lost. An AGM battery is built with the minimum possible electrolyte to achieve specifications. As electrolyte volume is lost so is effective plate area and capacity lost. As electrolyte water is lost the acid becomes more concentrated increasing apparent battery voltage and terminating constant current charging phases early.

take in to account that registering and recoding a battery are two different things. registering a battery is resetting the date mileage etc in the DME as the charging curve needed for the battery changes over its age. coding is for when changing the AH rating of the old vs the replacement battery. both only apply to AGM batteries.
