Cold Weather Package

Am I crazy or is the Cold Weather Package the biggest scam BMW puts out? If you want the seat warmers ok, but the ski bag thing is like adding insult to injury. We all know that unless you have an XI, even with snow tires the Bimmer is a two ton ice skate in less than an inch of snow. And the little headlight washer thingies...please. If anyone one can suggest how it is possible to take their BMW on a ski trip please let me know, because when I took mine to ski in the winter it was the single most terrifying experience of my life, :wow: and I've been to Iraq for 15 months.

My car has done well in the snow too...and in 2~3in with summer tires :eeps:...don't ask.

In fact, as far as cars go, I am more comfortable (driving wise) when driving in snow then any other car I have owned/driven. The rear wheel drive and the near perfect weight distibution make it very easy to pilot in the nasty weather.

I've been quite happy with nasty winter handling (with the right tires, of course) here on the north coast for three years, and the ski bag allows for leaving a rack on the roof all winter for three trips a year to a hill. The washers are entirely necessary if you live in a city that salts the roads every three hours like I do. Mid-week I don't even know what color the car is.

To each his own. that's why it's an OP-tion... :dunno:

Did you actually have winter tires on the one you drove on a ski trip?

Because... what "everyone knows" seems to be different than you think... My car is a tank with winter tires.. Safer and better handling than an AWD with all-season tires (I have one of those, too).

The scam is really on the Cic. Which is why I ordered only heated seats.

I wouldn't call it a scam so much as a package with limited value. I'm not going to take a cabrio skiing, even if I have snow tires on it.

And the headlight washers were panned enough here that I had no reason for them either.

You must have bought the Cheng Shin snow tire value pack: my car works fine in snow. With DSC on, it works great.

If insance Frenchmen in all-season shod Berlingos and tour buses can manage the Alps, so can your BMW....

Nope, it's not a scam - so you must be crazy :D
Seriously, I found a lot of value in the CWP - since basically the heated seats are $500 and the split-folding rear seat another $500 (and I have to have both), everything else comes for free. So the fact that I never used the ski bag doesn't bother me at all; about the headlight washers - they're kind of cool; I'm not crazy about the fact that I have to refill the window washer so often, but I'll live with it (and yes they can be disabled)

Yep,

I've even been caught in snow with my summer tires on several occasions and as long as I was careful and modulated the throttle and brakes I was just fine.

How well you get around in the snow depends much more on you driving technique than anything else. Winter tires and a good car help wonders, but driving technique and patience will keep you from flying off a cliff and at least get you home alive if your car isn't properly equipped.

The best part about the CWP (ok, not the best but the part I like) is that the ski bag is sealed around the pass-through so that NO slushy bits enter the cabin .

I have LM-22's for the winter and the car is a dream to drive.

YMMV.

I have the CWP for the price i thinks its a steal, like someone mention you get the heated seats and everything else is basically free. As for the headlight washers their alright i wish BMW would of installed a seperate button so it can be used on a seperate basis besides with the wipers. It doesnt snow down here but the headlight washers keep my light covers cleans after a rain storm.

Bimmer vs Exterra

I have a sports package (w/heated seats) - I definitely needed snow tires - I got caught in an unexpected 1 inch storm and I got STUCK - but when I got out I went straight for snow tires and I zip zoom wherever I want in the snow. I used to have an exterra and I feel just as safe, if not safer (because it moves quicker) in my lovely bimmer.

Over a 1.5 years of ownership, I took my 330i ZSP with the oem summer tires, to Lake Tahoe for ski trip once. My car did quite OK. Actually, I saw quite a few of E46 there.

Of course you cannot expect it to handle like on dry, but it did quite OK even without chain. The only place I had problem is the parking lot inside ski resort (North Star at Tahoe), but DSC keep me in control.

It wasn't one of the snow storm day tho.

I don't have ski rack for my 330 as I do not intend to use it for ski trip often, so I put the skis through the ski bag, two pairs of them, it works quite well too, keep my car clean.

I have the CWP and the only time I use it is during the rainy season. The headlight washers are a pain in the ass for the reasons mentioned above, but I usually only squirt the windshield in the rainy season when I get some nasty road **** all over the car anyway, so it is a non-factor that the washers go off. I think the only go off every 4 times you squirt your windshield. Since I have OB, I wash my car so often, I rarely use the windshield cleaner fluid anyway. All that said, I probably could have skipped the CWP and just got the heated seats. I do have fold-down rears as well.
