Hello everyone,

I am new here and I would like to get some assistance regarding coolant loss and high engine oil temperature. I have an F10 BMW 535d, 2016 model produced for the European market. I live in Cyprus and the car was exported from England to North Cyprus. Cyprus is fairly a hot country, and especially this year, we've seen temperatures reaching 45, 50 degrees Celsious. I've ECUtuned the car for stage one, it is now around 360 horsepower, 313 being stock. Where I work is a little far, so I have to travel about 35 miles and 35 miles back. I have been servicing the car every 5,000 miles since I had it, and have done about 4 services since then. I use regular Castrol Edge 5W-30 as BMW recommends and this is what my mechanic have been using on the car. My concerns after the REMAP are as follows:

1. About a month ago, the weather was very hot, around 40-45 degrees Celsious. As I was coming from work, I would floor the pedal occasionally, or pretty drive the car aggresively, and the engine oil temp would reach around 105-107 degrees C, and then I would ease the pedal and drive more moderately so the engine would cool down. My speed variations would be around minimum 50 miles an hour and 130 miles and hour - max 135. I was wondering why the engine oil temp reached/reaches such high temperatures and would 105/107 degrees Celsious harm the engine in any way for couple of periods of time?

2. I have also noticed that the flaps at the front grill do not open until the engine reaches its operating temperature. In fact, sometimes at idle, I watch and see if it opens or not, and when I stop the car to check, engine oil temp being around 100/102 degrees C, the flaps would still be closed. Would this be a problem or do the flaps open at even higher temperatures like 110 degrees maybe?

3. Recently, I have noticed that the engine also loses or leaks engine coolant. The car has around 45k miles/71k kilometers. I have taken the car to a mechanic and we couldn't find any coolant leaks. Can the engine coolant evaporate inside the engine because of the remap, high temps or any other reason? I have also decided therefore to flush the engine coolant with Castrol one, and it still loses or leaks engine coolant. Any ideas?

4. Today, we have checked that the engine oil was about quarter of a little or about 0.5 liter short, but I did not get any warning from the computer to top up the engine oil, which I believe should be more than 1 liter loss for the engine computer to throw a code. I've put about 250 grams/ 0.25 liters of oil into the engine, I will try to test the car tomorrow. The weather conditions have decreased considerably since I first got the car and it is around 30-35 degrees Celsious.

5. Would anyone recommend a thicker oil to this car like 10w-40 and why?

Thank you for all your support.

107 Oil Temp is normal in Hot Wx or heavy high speed driving, mine is same and also tuned.

If Coolant loss with no obvious leaks this is serious as is most likely the EGR Valve leaking internally which can cause a catastrophic Fire Hazard in the Plastic Inlet Manifold. There is a Recall to inspect the EGR Vale at your BMW Dealer, suggest to do this ASAP.

Stick to the recommended Oil type, changing won’t do anything positive.

Nice to see that not just the EGR Cooler is looked at but the general state of Carbon buildup also downstream... At about 100K Miles it’s time to De-Carbonize the entire system !

BMW Dealers will only concentrate on the EGR Cooler and nothing else so beware !
