Does Germany have something similar to Carfax?

I have an American friend who has been living in Germany for about a year, and he will continue living there for about one more year.

He is thinking of buying a BMW in Germany, and he recently asked if Germany has the equivalent of Carfax???

Other than dealer service/repairs, how can someone in Germany chase down automobile history info like we can on Carfax?

Thanks.

No, there isn't. The best thing he can do is, with the acceptance of the current owner, to get a service record from the dealer, where the car is being serviced. But he should keep in mind that, in case of a body repair, some people might choose the way to get a repair estimate, present it to the insurance, get the money and take the car to an independent shop, which might repair the car for less than the estimate. The money difference goes to the pocket of the owner ;)

Another possibility, IMO the best option, would be to contract an approved vehicle appraiser to have the car checked. It will cost him a 'couple' of Euros, but at the end he won't have a bad conscience.
