BMW recommends using Drei Bond 1209 when installing the cylinder head cover. This is removed when doing a valve check/adjust.

Chester Wong put me on to a sealant company in Japan called Three Bond which makes Three Bond 1209.
US distributer in OH. 513-779-7300.
There is also a sealant company in Germany called Drei Bond which dosen't offer 1209.
I found a parts bulletin 99 02 97 (March97) which lists alternate sources.
It listed Drei bond with a part number of 07 58 9 062 376. Going to the parts info on that number it showed Three Bond 1209. Bingo.
The alternate source was 3M 8661 and Loctite 80036/(PX66BR)
3M has an online store. They are currently offering free shipping so I ordered a 3oz tube from them. $8.37 plus $0.50 tax.
Will try ordering it from BMW too.
The Three Bond 1209 is black and the 3M 8661 one is clear.
