Hello, i recently bought an facelift e46 touring, with m47 (2.0 110kw) engine and automatic transmision, but i have one problem. High fuel consumption. 27 MPG (8.5l/100km) driving 100 percent only highway ( speed stable 90km/h). In town i get about 18 mpg (13l/100km) I think thats a little too much. Ive had an e39 3.0d 142kw automatic, and it used to get about 33 MPG. Is this 27 mpg on highway is normal in winter for this motor?
Pulls hard, new filters, oil, egr deleted.
Engine temp is stable, and goes to operating temperature very quickly.

Can someone answer my question please? Thanks.

You should be getting between 53 to 43 mpg only if you drive 100km per hour

Couple of questions

1) What country are you in?

2)What ambient temperature are you driving in?

3) what temp does your car’s dash say it is outside? Is that the correct temperature?

4) How old and how many miles on the car?

5) when was your last tune up?

if you are in a cold or warm climate and your exterior temp sensor is failing, the fuel control will never go closed loop and the fuel system will pump in a cold engine fuel mixture.

It`s a matter of volumetric efficiency....that little four-banger is working a lot harder than the straight six in the E39. Car weights are not all that dissimilar, so the E39`s superior power-to-weight ratio gives it several advantages, fuel efficiency being one of them. I don`t think there`s a "problem" with your E46, it`s more like your expectations are not realistic....

Did you even read Post # 7 ????
You`re attempting to compare an anemic , normally-aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine with a 6-cyl. diesel. That`s a no-win situation, my friend !

You talk very much without knowing.

On diesel, DPF is stuck?
If it's just bit stuck, there are companies which can clean it, if it's too stuck, then it should be replaced.

Both cost money.. my wife's e87 might have the issue..
