Engine shuts off whenever I open driver's door

Hello everybody

With my new 530e I have noticed that whenever the car is running, I put the car in p and open the driver's door for whatever reason the engine immediately shuts off. Doesn't matter what mode I'm in, even when in sport and shifter in sport setting.

This is annoying because sometimes I don't want the engine to shut off (forgot something in the house, someone wants to hand me something, need to check engine compartment while engine is running....)

There is a setting in I drive which shuts off car when door opens, but that is for electronics not the engine. It has no effect on the issue above

Any help will be much appreciated

I can't say I've tried it in a while, but my F10 automatically went into "Park", but the engine did not shut down.
The F10 and G30 (non-E) go into Park if you open the driver door, do NOT have seatbelt fastened, and roll more than a couple of inches. I typically pull into my garage, take seatbelt off and open my door for slight spacing adjustment of the car by rolling about an inch or 2. It remains in Drive. If the seatbelt is fastened and door open, it will stay in Drive even rolling.

They do not behave as stupidly as our Acura, which goes into Park immediately upon opening the driver's door, even with the seatbelt fastened. You can't even purposely select Neutral and roll the car with the door open in the Acura. I actually find that to be a safety hazard. Luckily, you can defeat this "dumb" system by buckling the seatbelt on the empty seat. This is how I get that car through a carwash without shutting off the engine and taking a chance that the car will be hit by the trailing car when the carwash jockey fumbles at re-starting the engine.

My 530e engine is almost never running at all when I'm stationary. Which is good - it's how it should be.

Why do you want to defeat the functionality that you have paid extra for?!
That last sentence is somewhat humorous. I've paid extra for a lot of stuff in my life that I didn't like. Sadly they don't consult me about what features they should put on vehicles.

There is no need to leave the engine running when the car is not being driven.

Restarting the engine off course needs some extra fuel, but when you stop for more than a few second, stopping the engine already saves fuel.

I understand what you are saying, and understand the possible logic in not keeping the car running when the door opens.
However, I wish they gave me the option to override that.
I mean I might need to want the engine stay running when I want t check the engine compartment. Let's say there is a sound I would like to better check coming from the engine compartment.... or any other reason....

Can anybody with a 530e confirm this behavior to be a normal setting for the edrive models?

Thanks!

My i3 does the same thing. But if you either keep the seat belt on or take it off and leave our foot on the brake, the car will not shut off when you open the driver side door.

I don't mind it and I've grown to live with it. However, the only thing that I hate about it is when I have the AC running on a hot day, and when the engine shuts off the AC will start to get stale and no longer blow cold. Likewise with the heater when turning on the car in the garage to warm up the inside on colder mornings. My work-around.... I have to go in through the passenger side, using a stick to hold down the brake and and start the car so that way it stays running with the heater blowing (or AC blowing to cool the car down on a hot day).

In snowy conditions and the 530e I want to get in, "turn on car" so I can get the heater/defroster going off battery. Get out of car and start scraping the windows. However, usually, the opening the door cancels the heating/defroster. Having a human in the passenger seat seems to allow it to stay on. This is the scenario that usually burns me and is different from every other car I've owned.

It's absurd what BMW makes us do for such stupid thing.
I did the same thing through the open window....

My M550i does the same thing. I get out to get the mail and leave the car running for the A/C for anyone left in the car and when I get back in I have to restart the car. It's not like when the car cuts off at a stop light and you just lift your foot from the brake and the car restarts. Just annoying...........
but not as annoying as the car keeps "running" (minus the engine) when I get out of it in my garage. I've returned 45 minutes later (for my nightcap in the garage fridge) and the radio and lights are still going. I'm sitting in service right now and hoping that gets corrected.

is this 530E design error?

when I park the car and open my driver door, the engine and cooling system will shut off. It is annoying when my wife is still inside the car during AZ summertime. I have to push the start button to re-start the car.

The other complaint is that the air conditioning will not be on until you move the gear to R or D.
In AZ, the car is pretty hot. we have to take out the sun shades and we have to move the car to get the air condition going. it is kind of dangerous.

Have gone thru car setting and door lock setting.. it still does the same. it will be great to hear what others think.

On the 530e, if you are in park, with one foot on the brake you can press the gas pedal and the engine will start. You can then open the door and it will stay running. I use this when there is not enough battery to run the a/c when getting out but need to leave someone in the car while I run into a store.
