Well, I've made a start.

Following the Haynes guide, I have removed drivers airbag and steering wheel.

But I still can't see what I'm looking for and the manual is a bit vague about it.

Can anyone tell me what the component looks like that cancels the indicator stalk?

Do I need to strip down the steering more to get at it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I haven't looked at the E46 indicator cancelling mechanism, but it should be a cam in line with the indicator stalks. Most likely you will have to replace component (3) in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BN11&mospid=47615&btnr=61_1061&hg=61&fg=35&hl=1 although it could be the indicator stalk itself (component (1)).
