1.9 Z3 M44 The easy way is to remove all the existing intake that goes over the top of the radiator, together with the air intake funnel that is next to the headlight. The two pop in clips holding the funnel in are hard to release so I used a hacksaw blade and cut through them. Remove the funnel from the corrugated tubing (bit of destruction needed) and keep the funnel but discard the tubing. Go to the other side of the car and see how the funnel fits just alongside the headlight and next to the coolant top up container. This is where you will fit the funnel once you have modded it.
Cut the funnel just where it bends and discard the bend. Tuck the funnel into the gap by the radiator as described. Mark with a pencil where the funnel hits the airbox. You will see that there are two parallel lines sticking out of the side of the box, this is where you will cut a hole the same size as the intake funnel. I used a jigsaw with a fine blade. Keep the cutout piece as you will use this to cover the original hole. I used pop rivets and a glue gun to do this.
Put the funnel in place and refit the airbox tucking the funnel through the hole you have just made in the airbox. I did not use any fixings as the funnel can't fall out. I didn't bother sealing it either.
I can't comment on any improvement yet as I have just replaced the ribbed belts, water pump and idler pulley and have not had time to take it for a run. Looking at the original setup though with that pipe running across the top of the radiator, anything would be an improvement!
