I wanted a cup holder and looked at all the options. Ordered one from ECS. It is OEM BMW and fit with no problems. Provides as much storage as without as the slot is much deeper.

All you do is life out the cassette holder and remove two screws that hold it and the front storage tray and set this in place. It has one screw that holds it in. It sits higher than what it replaced and so works well as an arm rest also. The front cup holder is deeper than the back so you may be restricted as to how tall a cup you feel comfortable putting in the second spot. The front spot also has a removable ring to accommodate stepped styro cups...Tried my cassette this weekend and it works well so now get to try and find some cassettes to listen to. Ebay, be my friend.

Well darn you Blacklane. I tried a 12 oz soda can and a 16 oz styro cup that I use for my coffee. Neither fits well, at all. Leaves them sitting way to high and wedged in. I do have an automatics transmission (and cruise control, Yay!) so shifting isn't a problem. I think I'm going to remove the bottom up to and including the step in each holder. That should let a cup sit much deeper and be more stable. Will report in later.

I removed the bottom of the front holder including the step and that helps a lot for holding a cup or can. The can goes it till it hits the sides of the console as they taper inward a bit. The styro cup sits well as it's taper matches the taper of the holder. I'm going to put a piece of carpet or sponge under this to catch condensation. I don't get that from styro but you would from an aluminum can....And that was the only aluminum can I had in the house. I don't drink sodas. Just coffee and tea, and a very occasional malted beverage, but never before or during a drive.
