[Help!] BMW F30 Front Brake Reset Not Possible

Make: BMW
Model: 316i
Year: 2013

I replaced the front brake pads and rotors, along with the brake wear sensor. However, I encountered the warning message in red text:
"Brake system."
"Drive moderately"

On the iDrive screen, the following warning message appears:
"Continue journey at a moderate speed. Brake pads need to be replaced. Have brake pads checked by Service."

Then, when I tried to reset the front brake pads km counter by pressing down the trip reset button, the following message in yellow text appears:
"------ km"
"Reset not possible"

Photos showing the new front brake wear sensor are attached to this post.

Could anyone help me to solve this problem?

I didn't have this problem at all when I replaced the rear brake pads and rotors.

Thank you for the information. It took me 1 day and a half to install the software and learn how to clear the fault code. However, the brake sensor light comes right back on after the code has been cleared.

https://youtu.be/YJqaDbtuvuw

In the video, I gave a command to clear the fault code at 0:08. It took about 4 seconds to clear the codes. And the brake sensor warning light comes right back on at 0:13.

Could you please help me?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have just removed the wheel, and tested the sensor with a multi-meter. It shows that the new sensor that was installed doesn't have resistance at all. So it should be working. I have unplugged it and plugged it back in. It doesn't seem to do the trick. And the warning light came right back on right after I have cleared the code.
I have taken this video of the wiring:

What can I do next?

I also agree about this simple way that “sensor” is really a grounded cable when worn out break pad, but are you sure you have connected the cable correctly? You seems to have a cable connector with no were to go at the end of the video. The cable to the break pad should have only one wire and not two as in your video. I would check with the other side of the car if that’s correct. You did change both sides of the front axle or?

Sorry for the confusion. As you can see in the video, there are two sensor cables. One is new and one is old. I reason I tried using the old one was because I read on some other posts that suggested people to cut out the old wire and twist the two wires together and it would solve the problem. But I didn't seem to get it to work either way. Right now, I have unplugged the old one and left the new one there, which is connected to the brake pads. But the warning light still comes on every time I start the car and there's a "ding" sound when I turn the car off.

Have you tried this or figured out the fault?

I haven't had the chance to take off the rear wheel and check the rear brake pads sensor yet. However, the fault code does say "Brake-pad wear, front axle, plausibility"
So I doubt that would help, but I will surely check it out today or tomorrow.

Ok you maybe right about that. Whats the name of the program you used to reset the codes. Ista or esys?
You can reset your brakes by using the imbedded menu in the instrument cluster.
1. Start the engine
2. Press and hold trip/reset button until a 4 step menu comes up
4. Scroll to 4 unlock
5. Enter the sum of the last 5 digits of vin #
6. Now scroll thru to step/item 19 reset computer
7. Push button this will reset any reset impossible values to factory
Intervals.
8. Shut off or wait and menu will go away
9. All done

For item 19, is it "DTC" ?

There is a active fault present but to sum up you have already:
1. Changed the wear sensor
2. Tried reset
3. You have short circuit the cable and still no luck
4. Tried reset with ista and at the cluster.

I don’t have any good suggestions left. I will check out some more and come back to you. But I know the fault code says the front axle but check the rear any way if it’s not to much work.

I saw a another tread with the same fault that you have and they did:
Try this when reset the break service on the cluster.
When You see "----" displayed, release the odometer reset button, then pushed and held it again
Then, press the START button to turn off the car.

the display will still be on.
continue holding down the button and <5sec it should reset

Press start again and the fault should have been reset

Hello, I have a F30 320d 2012, and i'm having the same problem.

I have changed the pads with sensors, and tried everything sugested in this thread, except for the ODBII/Software reset method, since it's my last option to spend money for this problem.

But with no success at all, the light keeps on.

Did someone solve this already?

Appreciate your help very much.

...Thank you

Hi Guys,
I have a 2014 F30 320i and have replaced the front brakes and the sensor. I can not reset the lights on the dash. When I start it says drive with caution and replace brake pads.
Yesterday bought another sensor thinking that it might be a faulty sensor and exactly the same thing. Can not reset the dash alarm. I am using the odometer reset method where I press the start button and get into the menu via the odometer button and it says reset not possible.

Anyone experienced a similar problem and how was it resolved.

Thanks,
Claude
