Hi all. I have an 11 plate 520d f10. I started to notice water accumulating in the rear left passanger footwell a couple of months ago (behind the front passanger seat)

I dried the water and thought the problem had gone away however today when cleaning the car it looks to have got worse. It is so bad now that there is water coming through the holes which clip into the floor mats (i will post a video). I have done visual checks and nothing stands out. Does anybody have an idea or experienced any similar problems.

Just to confirm there are no other wet parts of the car. Even under the front passanger seat is dry. The inner doors are dry.

Many thanks

That is almost for sure sunroof drain... (just a matter if which part of it)

Did you have your windshield replaced any time in the recent past? I think the drain tube for the sun roof is most likely disconected at the roof level, but the roof liner should also show signs of this.

The second most likely cause along the pillars that bring the water down and out of the car. Not sure if its exactly like this for the BMW, but the pillars will have a drain tube in them also and maybe a connection that is leaking.

If you had the windshield replaced, its possible that when they took the car apart they didn't put it back properly and hence the connections are leaking into the car.

or its as simple as debris in the lines or well around the sun roof.

I would be very surprised if its not related to the sunroof.

btw; had this happen to me once before, and it got into the dash - you will want to have the fixed ASAP, there is tons of electronics that that water can get into and the repair bill is not pleasant.

Same problem

I have the same issue with my 2012 f11
Absolutely soaked

https://youtu.be/gaGQd6WweEo

I phoned my local BMW dealer who wanted ÂŁ90 just to look at it.
The next day I had a good look and the door seal (rear passenger) wasnt seated right.
So I reseated it properly and stripped and dried out the car.

Jet wash tomorrow to make sure its cured.

BMW said the as it was 3 years 6 months old it wasnt covered by the warrenty!!!!

You can try taping up where the rear passenger door frame meets the window on the outside of the car. If that stops the water from coming in, then it is the weather barrier leaking thru inside the door. Between that and the sunroof drain are the likely cause.

Hi doddy-88

I also have the same problem on my F10 2010 530d - I've done all sorts of tests but can't get to the root cause.... I'm now thinking that the door vapour barriers need to be changed with this butyl stuff.
I've now coated powder (talcum) at the bottom of front passenger door card and rear passenger door cards to see if there's any water leaking. Did you get anywhere with your situation

Regards
Imran

Hello again,

On further investigation and checking all my door VPs which were all ok I then pulled the passenger from carpet away from under the glovebox to find the leak coming from this oval kind of cap/gromit - see image below. Anyone know what it's function is.
I managed to remove it and found the rubber seal around the top worn and frailed which was causing the water from the windscreen drain to make its way behind this cap. I have a video of this actually happening but not sure how to attach.

I would love to see the video. I see some people have somehow embedded a YouTube video in their response. Have you tried that?

F10530dmsport, Thanks for posting the video. It looks like a fair amount of water was getting in. This will surely help others diagnose this issue. It must feel good to have solved the problem. Was the water entering in the front footwell area and then travelling to the rear footwell area? Were both the front and rear floors getting wet?

Guys , this appears to be a regular problem for 3/4 yr old cars. The front scuttle drains which collect rainwater from windshield channel the water into a front drain tube. This can become blocked with twigs/leaves etc. Alternatively, same drain tube can be blocked from underside of vehicle with dirt/road grime. If you can identify the front drainage tubes a good clean with pressurised air or water to clear them . Once you done this its just a matter of drying out the inside of the car .good luck.

Thank you, Papadoc. Would like to know if there are any reference to help locate the scuttle drains in the front? What do i needed to take out before i can reach the drains? Have tried but seems like the aircon ducts do not allow me to squeeze my hands there or, I cant see it clearly from the top.... Appreciate all the help in advance.

Try this YouTube video. This explains where the blockage is. If you cannot access this from the top then if you remove the front wheel, then peel back the plastic inner wing this will give you access to where the water exits . It's like a plastic flap . If this is clogged up . Air or water should help to clear this tube.
