Doesn't matter, you can do either...I did the software first....you can always add in the cable later....usually it's plug and play after installing bmw standard tools (EDIABAS needed for cable recognition)...sometimes you may need to use device manager to verify the COM port and may have to change it on the configuration file....it's an easy setup if you know how to use device manager on windows.

Like swamp said, you can use it without being connected to the vehicle...so just go browsing all the functions, etc....and you***8217;ll see it***8217;s really intuitive.

software then exercise with cable in bed

a great thing about Ista is the ability to do stuff/practice within the program without being hooked up to a vehicle ....so ....get your hot chocolate/slipper on/logs on high in the fireplace and start learning all the module paths .....and ....make a library of these paths

after a few practices you will find the logic flow all pulls together in you mind for each module like dme/egs/ihka etc etc....you will understand how the software guys layed out their stuff....after a short while you will be using the programs blind folded

you will find the parts drawings/electrical diagrams and repair steps very very helpful

I will post some very useful paths for you ....happy hols all !

ps ....good youtube bmw software/diagnostic aces guys to follow are .....bmw doctor.....vehicular diy.....diagnose dan

also ....if you come up with good software paths and tips don't forget to post/share
